TTC After a Loss

Meat safety question

Dh got a couple of ribeyes out to thaw this morning, probably around 10 am.  I just found them (3:45), he never put them in the fridge.  They are warm to the touch.  I went ahead and put them in the fridge.  He plans to marinate them over night and cook them tomorrow.  Do you think it's safe to eat them?

Re: Meat safety question

  • I'm state food safety certified :) My training says that you can leave frozen out for a max of 4 hrs or if the internal temp is 35 degrees or less. Since you can't get the temp, I would say no since it's been over 4 hrs   :(   Bummer!

  • I'd probably use them, but I also eat raw cookie dough and cake batter.  I'd give them a good sniff test before you marinate them though.

  • My mom would say no, if it's warm to the touch. It's supposed to still be cool when you put it in the fridge.

I'd go with this probably, my first instict was maybe, but if shanna is food safety certified I'd more safely go with what she said.

  • If you were going to eat them today, I'd have said go for it (meat grills better when it's brought up to room temperature) - but since you're going to re-chill them, I'd say no.  Although, my mom used to defrost meat like this all the time, and we never got sick.

  • I guess i'm weird. I would still eat them, as long as it's today. I've never been sick before from food. *knocks on wood*
