Tired of waking before 5am

Who has a 1 year old? DS was sleeping great for months, but just in the last 2 weeks he has started wanting to be UP around 5 am. We've been nursing at 4am for months, but he has stopped going back to sleep afterwards. I was getting him (from his crib in his room) when he woke at 4 (after 8 hours of sleep) and bringing him into my bed to nurse and sleep for a few more hours. We would get up around 6 or 7. I don't know why he stopped going back to sleep. I'm thinking the only way to resolve this (if that's possible) is to stop nursing in the morning, but then he'll just cry so hard i think he'll be awake anyway.

 Anyone gone through this?

Is it a stage?

Any suggestions?

the 12 month board wasn't that helpful, i think there are just too many people and too many posts.

Re: Tired of waking before 5am

  • I am no help here because DD started STTN when she was 7 months old and she would sleep from 7pm-7am. I think at this point they don't need to nurse during the night anymore. So maybe you can try to wean him from the morning nursing. If he starts crying, maybe you can go in there (or your husband can go) and try and soothe him back to sleep without nursing? The other thing is maybe you can nurse him in his room and put him down in his crib again instead of taking him into your room?

  • Read Ferber's "Solving your child's sleep problems." It's an incredible resource. I regret passing it up for so long because we didn't want to CIO. But it has a lot of useful tips that don't involve crying. For example, DD's sleep dramatically improved after adjusting her bedtime as suggested by Dr Ferber. He discusses early wakings; you should check it out.
