It was an allergic reaction...

The whole story.. It may be a little hard to follow with changing verb tenses. I'm tired.

You know Sam has the abscess on his booty, right? They original prescribed keflex for it... but right after my DH picked it up from the pharmacy the ARNP called and said that after they discussed it they wanted to change the rx to clindamycin.  So they said were going to call it in but the pharmacy said they didn't - long story short they had our name spelled wrong and it took an extra day to get it straightened out. (They replaced the S with an F har de har har)  We finally got the right rx yesterday afternoon.  He had an afternoon dose and an evening dose.  I started to notice a rash on his belly in the afternoon but thought nothing of it.  He had a morning dose and later in the morning we changed his central line dressing... huge rash. All over his chest and belly and a little bit on his neck and ear.  It kind of looked like the rash he had before only more widespread.

I called the clinic and spoke with a nurse.  I explained everything too her, gave her my thoughts, told her we already had keflex here and asked if we could just switch him to that.  She spoke with a doc and called me back.  They wanted him to come in to OMO to make sure it was truly an allergic reaction which was understandable

We took him to OMO and he was seen by the resident and the attending almost immediately.  I was totally impressed.  "Yep... it's probably an allergic reaction. Let me think about some options and I'll be back."

Fast forward FOUR HOURS.  They've decided to put him on some other antibiotic that requires a precert and my pharmacist hasn't heard of it and will have to order it.  But it's a holiday weekend.  Nobody can be reached to obtain a precert.  Even if they could it can't be ordered until Tuesday so they told us to just give him the keflex until then. :|  P.S. Chemo is supposed to start Tuesday.  Gah.

We're home.  He's fine.  We went to dinner to celebrate not being admitted and he was so good. :)

Side note: I've had no motivation to blog so I'll probably recycle this a bit. :P

Re: It was an allergic reaction...

  • that sounds like one exhausting day.

I'm glad you have something to give him at least to hopefully help his hiney in the meantime.  I hope the rash isn't bothering him.

    Dinner out sounds great!

  • Poor baby.  :(

I feel you on the weird antibiotics after allergic reactions.  Our new allergist's office is supplying us with a laminated card that lists ALL Saxton's allergies, AND a list of approved antibiotics.  So if we have to go to the ER, life is a little easier for us.

  • Oh how exhausting. I'm glad that you didn't need to get admitted, and that you got to go out to dinner! And I'll keep my fingers crossed that it gets better quickly and things are magically looking up by Tuesday!
