Looking for any thoughts, opinions, experiences, etc as we're considering United... We can go anywhere in the Cities, but my one criteria really is an OB/GYN dr on site 24/7, which United does have.
and naturally i just noticed another post down the board about United! lots of good tips in there...but if anyone has anything else to offer, much appreciated!
I haven't read the post you're referring to but I had my firstborn there. It was very important to me that they have Children's Hospital right there but mostly it was as simple as my primary dr referring me to an OB/Gyn clinic, and THAT clinic delivers at United. Basically United chose me, not the other way around.
I had a *fantastic* delivery... if I think about it much at all I get teary eyed in a good way. The delivery experience was 100x better than my second at Woodwinds for a variety of reasons.
The big difference tho between United and Woodwinds was at United there were a lot of employees who were harder to understand (non-native English speakers or just thick accents?) I delivered at 10pm, so by 2am I hadn't slept the night before in contractions, was TOTALLY out of it as a first time mom, and the poor nurse was Sooooooooo hard to understand. That didn't make for an easy post-baby relaxation.
And people stopped by NONSTOP it felt like, once baby was there. It was like, OK, you here for me, or the baby, or from the state, or a parent educator, a lactation consultant, or a regular nurse or what? It was like a revolving door.
Perks at United: the nursing store = AWESOME. I was in a total daze as a first time mom and the lactation consultant brought me to the sizing room, fitted me for amazing nursing bras, and I don't know what I would have done without HER or that service right there in the hospital!
I ended up going to Woodwinds the 2nd time... I wanted a less "hospital" place, but the entire experience from finding the midwives, having appointments, the delivery... and the medical horror/error they did means other than some really nice (tho clueless) nurses post delivery, and their AMAZING tubs, I don't have positive feelings about it at all. It makes me sad because I'm this natural-delivery advocate and they should be the best place.
It was a c-section after a failed induction. The c/s was really awful. But that was the doctor/anesthesiologist or maybe just a plain old fluke.
But I was happy with the hospital. I got to see DS right away in recovery.
I agree that you have constant visitors there. It is so annoying. Between the hospital photographer and the state people (who needed to do SSN stuff) and nurses. It was crazy and I don't think I got much rest.
It was reassuring that Children's is right there. Thankfully, DS didn't have any complications, but we were happy to have that extra security.
I agree that the nursing store rocks.
United didn't really stand out to me as exceptional, but I haven't delivered anywhere else. I think it was a good hospital... but just not out-of-this-world wonderful.
St. Joes might be a better option. OB suggested it for more one on one attention as United is a very busy hospital. St. Joes is right down the street and close as well.
Mich411 - my doctor actually forbade me from going to St. Joes. Something to do with issues/lawsuits with their deliveries recently. They are making changes at St. Joes & Woodwinds however, as a result, so hopefully it will be great! (But still wanted to share this with you in case you want to inquire about whatever the issues were...I don't know much, as I didn't inquire since I wasn't considering St. Joes.)
WOW! Thanks for the update! You better believe that I am going to jump on that one. Shhh, legal issues was not on my list. I am going to check the three I am considered. Saint John's, Saint Joe's and United.
My OBGYN has delivery rights at about 5 hospitals..including United and St. Josephs. ?When I told her we were leaning towards United because of the NICU, she told me she LOVES delivering at St. Josephs. ?I hadnt heard anything about any lawsuits. ?oh boy.
