Am I the only one

who's doctor isn't trying to get my into early labor?  I feel like everyone is coming back from their appointments with advice to get labor started prior to hitting 40 weeks.  Meanwhile at my appt this past week, the MW told me to keep in mind that most first babies come after their due date.  What the heck?!  Should I be doing something?   I wasn't going to start panicking until I hit 40 weeks.

Re: Am I the only one

  • I think that a lot of us are having health problems or expecting huge babies, and that's why our doctors are pushing for earlier deliveries.

Just be happy you & the baby are healthy and you probably won't have to push out a 10lb'er. Wink

  • like Ashley said it's due to concern about health or size. My doctor said she would never suggest taking these measures before 40 weeks, and wouldn't induce until 41w3d, but if I want any chance at a vaginal delivery, its better sooner than later.
  • Nope, you're not the only one (well ever.) Induction wasn't discussed for me until the 39 week appointment, at which they said, if we see you here next week, we will tell you how it is set up.

Only 5% of babies actually come on their due dates.  Hang in there!!!

  • Hang in there, love!! I know this point sucks, but just be thankful you and baby are both healthy and there's no reason to get him/her out early!  It'll happen!
  • Oh Gosh!  I know what you're going thru.  Dont' worry, you're not the only one.  I agree with Cristina, it will happen but do remember first babies are usually late
  • I definitely don't want to be induced, but I just thought it was strange how many of the girls' doctors were already talking about early induction when mine will let me go until 42 weeks.  As thrilled as I'd be to have this baby soon, I've already come to terms with the fact that I may have to wait until August.  Crying

Ash- I know my body wasn't built to push out a 10 pounder!  Aside from being PG, I'm tiny!  I'm thankful that they haven't said anything to me yet about the baby being big, even though it feels huge to me!

  • In Holland its very common to wait until 40wks5days before membrane stripping and until 42 weeks until you get induced, so don't be alarmed just yet :-)
  • Nope, my dr wasn't in any rush for me.  G was 9 lb 15 oz, but she had never even estimated his size.  We didn't talk induction til I was almost 41 wks.
  • You are doing fine. I think that some docs are in a rush. I was told by my midwives that I wouldn't have a baby over 7.5-8 lbs, he ended up being 9lbs. Don't panic until you are past 40 weeks. Hang tight!
  • My Dr basically just told me it would be to my advantage if I can get this baby to come out before 40 weeks due to how big it's looking already. They will absolutely NOT induce before 41 weeks though, even if I'm getting ginormous. I'm young, healthy and completely low risk.

So, it was more a suggestion than anything else.  There's no way to know if all of the walking, bouncing etc will actually work. Babies don't tend to listen to doctor's suggestions :)

I would have MUCH rather heard "You look good, baby looks good, keep cooking as long as you want" haha because I feel like that's what's going to happen anyhow!

  • Natalee, My midwife would not talk about the future at all last week and I kind of forced her into it yesterday.  That is when she told me that I would have a sonogram at 40 weeks and she would not let me go past 41.  Don't stress, I think that it depends on the doctor.
  • Mine is still in the "lets get to 37 weeks" stage.  I am not sure if that means he is afraid this one seems ready to go.  I also got told that I am going over my due date by 10 days before he will do anything.  Personally, I want this baby out soon.

  • At my 40 week appt my doctor said "we'll see you next week," and that was that. Just keep in mind that most early inductions where you're body just isn't ready lead to c-sections.
