help with gender reveal

I am finding out the gender on the 16th and have a BBQ planned with friends and family on the 17th. I want to do something fun and special but I'm not sure what. I have heard about the color in the cake thing, and I'm not sure if I'll have time to do this or if I even want to. Anybody have any other creative gender reveal ideas??

Re: help with gender reveal

  • First, just a heads up, people are going to jump and you and say its the SEX, not the gender, so be prepared.

Second, why not just have a toast when everyone sits down to eat.  Thank everyone for being there and, oh by the way, it's a boy/girl.  Or if you say a prayer before the meal put that into the prayer at the end.

I really think the whole pink/blue dessert thing is stupid and over done.

  • haha... sex vs. gender.. wow.... I had no idea this was a sensitive subject!! So much to learn. The prayer is a good idea and just throw it in at the end.. hmmm...
  • A friend of mine recently did a reveal at a family BBQ, also. What they did is they went to a party supply store and bought a bunch of inexpensive pink balloons and had them inflated with helium. They then stuffed them into a box and taped it up. When it was time to reveal, they sliced open the box, and all the pink balloons started floating away. I thought that was a pretty fun idea.

Super cute -- but maybe don't let them escape completely -- leave long strings anchored in the box?  Letting them loose causes problems for animals and marine life down the line :)  But otherwise, totally adorable.

  • Since it's close to the 4th of July maybe try to get a box of just blue sparklers if it is a boy. I don't think red sparklers will work as well for a girl and pink is probably hard to find. Maybe give everyone a sparkler with a little tag that says "It's a boy" or "It's a girl" It shouldn't take very long if there aren't very many people.

I'm doing the cake thing at my shower it may be overdone but I like how it is subtle.

  • My little one is 5 months old now. I just wrote an entry in my blog about how we did our big reveal. Check it out. Sorry, its way too long and I'm too lazy to write it all out again! LOL Thanks!

  • We were in a similar position for Father's Day and didn't have time to do a cake. We ended up not having time to do anything, but that's another story...

My original "Plan B" was to bring something like Rice Krispy treats or cookies or something similar to our family BBQ. Underneath, there would be a sticker that read, "It's a Boy!" or "It's a Girl!" We would then watch as people picked up/ate the dessert and the sticker became more visible. I thought it would be hilarious to see who was the first to notice and how THEY would share the news! If you can find the stickers in advance, you can just toss the one you don't use. Just an idea!! Please let me know if you (or anyone else) use the idea - I would love to hear how it goes! Smile
