Weight Loss Ladies - I need your help

I really need your help.

We leave for our cruise in 23 days. And I'm really disgusted by where I am weight wise. I gained some weight during our family reunion last week and I just feel gross...and I don't want to go on our cruise feeling like this. I feel like I can reasonably drop 5-10 pounds in the next 3 weeks, but I've got to stop doing crap like I did today...eating a bunch of Goldfish crackers during Will's nap and then pigging out on McDonald's this evening because I was too lazy to cook.

So two questions:

1 - What "program" are you on that's working for you? Weight Watchers/counting calories works for me for a week, but then I sabotage myself. Exercise isn't the issue - I run about 35 miles a week and lift weights 3 times a week.

2 - How do you stop the self sabotaging? I know I want to lose weight. I've known that for months. But I'm stuck where I am...and in the moment, it's so easy to think, "I don't care." In reality I do. WTF is wrong with me?!

Any advice you can give? I feel like I need a shrink or something to figure out why I'm so stubborn when it comes to losing weight!

  • When I first decided to start losing weight it took a lot of self control but I would only let myself eat every three hours, and I would measure out a serving size of anything that I ate.  I always felt like I was constantly hungry but after a few weeks your stomach gets used to it.  I just would drink water whenever I got hungry but it hadn't been 3 hours yet.

  • I don't have any advice, but I'm exactly like you.  I need to lose 30 pounds, bad.  My health is becoming an issue because I've always had blood pressure issues.  I feel for ya though.  I'm doing weight watchers, but I love sweets and I hate working out.  So I'm very slowly losing nothing/staying the same :(

I am right there with you.  I leave in 23 days for the beach and I really need to lose 10 pounds.  I've been doing this diet.  I lost almost 20 pounds when I did it several months ago, but then I gained 10 pounds back, so I'm trying to lose those now.  It's not a typical diet, but it works really well for me because I only have to be disciplined for 24 hours.  I can wait until the next morning and eat whatever I'd like for breakfast and it helps me get through the diet days.  I only do low days on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, because of my schedule.

Do you want to do a buddy check-in or something?  I am a stress eater and under a lot of stress right now, so I could sure use the accountability.

  • Ditto on measuring for portion control. I always lose on WW when I consistently measure my food. Lately I have been lazy & eye-balling my portions & I am not losing like I was. It works for me because I am an "eat-what's-in-front-of-me eater." I do not normally go for seconds. I doubt it would work for you if you are likely to go for seconds. I also use guilt (we Catholics are good at that) to avoid snacks.

  • I put on a lot of weight after college. I wanted to lose it to go home (Buffalo) for Christmas one year. Pretty difficult considering I was starting just before Thanksgiving. And I didn't know I was allergic to wheat yet!

I kept a picture in my wallet of myself. I was wearing an awesome dress and really looked skinny/good in it. Whenever I'd want to cheat, especially drive through, I'd pull out the picture first to focus on how I really wanted to look that way again.

And if you've been wanting to eliminate allergens, there's nothing like a 3 week challenge diet to shredd pounds. =P And you'll feel great because any tiny allergens that may be making you sick or bloated will be gone!

  • The only diet that has ever helped me control cravings was the South Beach Diet and more specifically, the first week of the SBD when your diet is really restricted. It sucks for a few days, but after that the cravings really are gone and I found I didn't want crackers or candy or junk food.

  • I'm counting calories using My Fitness Pal..and sticking to it (no cheating on the weekends, etc.). For me to see results, it really has to be an all or nothing thing. If I allow myself to cheat, I'm not 100% committed to losing the weight.

It's really hard to get and stay motivated. I don't know what it was, but something in me finally clicked in January and I knew I could, and would, do this. I said I wanted to lose weight for months and months before I actually did something about it..and I did want to, just not bad enough, because I wasn't doing what I knew I had to do.

What works for me is planning everything out. I know what I'm going to eat for every meal and snack, I measure everything, I know what I can eat when we go out somewhere, etc. It's really hard to make good food decisions when you're starving so I make sure to eat something every 3 hours or so.

GL. I know you can do this!
  • The diet I used to loose weight on before I got pg was the flat belly diet.  I thought it worked great despite everything that happened in that same time frame (found out I was allergic to gluten and slacked on my exercising).  Here is a link to the book I used.  I could meet up with you to drop off my copy to you though.  I'm actually planning on going to Georgetown later today.

  • I have had success with Weight Watchers but my comment would be to not think of a bad meal or day as sabotage and the diet being over.  The next meal or day just start over and eat healthy again.  Exercise makes you hungry so smaller portions and exercising may make you binge sometimes but try to binge on healthy stuff. I love skinny cows icecream sandwiches so I eat one everynight.  And you may want to change up your exercise routine as well.  Try aerobics or some new tapes instead of running.  That may help with the plateau effect or jumpstart weight loss.

  • I started using Weight Watchers online at the beginning of the year. TODAY I met my goal weight...it took 6 months but I dropped 17lbs and I don't feel deprived at all.

My advice is to stick with the WW during the week. Maybe reduce your points very slightly so that you can pretty much take weekends off.  That's more of a long term solution. Also, can you make it to any WW meetings? Maybe the extra encouragement will help you feel better.

In the short term, I think it's really critical to turn off the negative voice in your mind. (I'm sure some people will scoff at this). Chances are you are the one telling yourself bad things about your body. The sooner you can turn that voice off or reprogram it to tell yourself good things, the sooner you will feel better...regardless of the weight loss. Start now. Look in the mirror every day and tell yourself something positive. I SWEAR this makes a much bigger difference in your life than the pounds. Self esteem is all in your mind, not your hips.

  • If you want to lose weight in the next 23 days, I don't advise WW - I'd go with a low carb/South Beach type diet.  I think WW is great for long term loss, but its not going to produce the results you are looking for in the next 3 weeks.  Get as much crap out of the house as you can, or at least lock it up in a cabinet with a baby proof lock - then it takes a little more effort to get to it.  Put a picture of your self that either you hate or one that you strive for on the fridge, junk cabinet or bathroom (or all of them) to remind yourself of your goal.  For exercise, I would add some interval training in your runs.  Intervals produce the best weight loss.  Try the 30-60-90 program - sprint for 30 seconds, slow down for 90 seconds for 10 minutes, then sprint for 60 seconds, slow down for 60 seconds for 10 minutes, then sprint for 90 seconds and slow down for 30 seconds for 10 minutes.
  • My best success has always been to cut out flour and sugar all together. Those are the things that really get me. Once I start eating them I'm not likely to stop. So if I just steer clear everything that has flour or sugar listed in the first 5 ingredients, it is way easier and the el-bees start to come off really well. It can be hard at first, but after a few days, it gets easier and I feel so much better without that crap dragging me down. Now, if only I'd take my own advice.

This exactly. It sounds like your body is "used" to the running, so you need to change it up and intervals is the way to go!

Also, go to the grocery store ASAP! At least for the next 23 days, you need to have a house full of healthy, EASY food. Not food that you have to cook - healthy stuff you can just grab and eat so you can skip the McD's.

  • Thank you guys for all the help and words of encouragement...I love this board! :)

Emer, I'd love to be your weight-loss buddy and keep each other accountable! :) My email is libbyann at gmail if you want to email me and we can work out the details.

That up day down day diet is really intriguing...I might try something like that until we leave for the cruise and then go back to counting calories/weight watchers type thing.

  • Something that is hugely helpful to me for healthy snacking is to make sure I have easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables. We bought a lot of higher quality food storage containers with silicone-sealing lids (ours are Snapware - you can get them from BBB with a coupon!) to store snacks. These will keep even apples from browning much better than the cheapie tupperware I used to use. When I get home from the grocery store, I wash and cut up fruits and veggies and store them in these. I know you probably can't avoid having some carb-y snacks for Will, but one thing that helps me is to hide them where I can't see them (not in the pantry).

Good luck! I think it's awesome that you are able to run so much. That is a huge hurdle (exercise, I mean) for so many of us. We are all our own worst enemies. You are beautiful!
