So I have a niece and have been talking to my sister about all the stuff she registered for and the stuff she thinks was a waste. I'd like to hear if anyone else heard of things not to get. My big goal is to not get stuck with a ton of pointless baby stuff, so hear is what I got so far
Don't need
-Bottle sanitizer
-Wipe warmer, even though I like it
-tons of pacifiers, best ones are the ones the hosptial gives them
-entire bedroom set b/c you can't use bumper or quilt
-bumboo chair and if you do keep it in the box and save the receipt..a lot of kids don 't like them along with swings and bouncy seats
-tons of bottles and register for more then one kind b/c some babies are picky
- tons of clothes, especially for winter baby. My niece was born the the same time I'm due last year and my sister has 3 tubs of clothes she never wore. With it always being cold she didn't take her out a ton and she wishes she returned some of the stuff early on for store credits instead of holding onto everything
Anyone have anything else to add?
Re: Baby items not to get...lets start a list!
I work for a pediatric dentist and he says the ones the hospital gives you are the worst because it will narrowing of their arch. He tells people the best pacifiers (if you use one) are nuks.
Good to know...my sister was just going by the ones my niece took, she hated the others but she was also never a big pacifier baby and only took one for a few months

keep the bulb syringe you get at the hospital, they are the only ones that actually suck. The ones you buy at the store don't work well
my ds was a february baby and wore nothing but sleepers in the winter months. he outgrew his clothes fast too. he wore newborn size for 3 weeks and 0-3 months size for 5 weeks.
you don't need to stock up on a ton of lotion, shampoo, etc. you really don't go through it very fast
agreed! I think the same goes for the matching hamper...I'd rather just take the dirty clothes to our hamper instead of having a seperate matching one. Who needs another spot for dirty clothes
You may want to have a separate hamper for baby if you are going to use different detergent for baby (ie, Dreft, Tide Free, etc.) . They recommend using these detergents in case LO's skin is sensitive.
I will think about your question. We lived in a 400 sf apartment when DS was born, so we avoided a lot of the stuff the baby industry tells you you need. Of course, I can't think of anything off the top of my head right now!
Ditto & Ditto. They may be cute but it's just more crap to have laying around. I'm not going to run through the house trying to remember where each hamper is.
Personally, I wouldn't use regular bumpers ever. But they're especially bad for young babies. Reduces airflow into the crib and baby can get trapped next to/underneath them and smother.
We're going to use breathable bumpers.

Bundle mes, extra heard support for car seat, harness covers for car seats or any ther after market car seat item (did not come out of the box with your car seat). It's not safe to use them in your car seat. If you need something more for winter babies then a blanket get a shower cap style cover. They go around the edge of the car seat and won't hurt safety.
Bjorn or other thing like it. After 10 lbs the thing hurts your back. Get a sling or wrap
Tummy time stuff babies hate it and you can do it better laying baby on your chest or tummy.
I loved the swing, bouncer, bumbo (this time I'm getting the summer infant super seat), diaper stacker, hamper.
What are considered "regular bumpers"? I never knew there was a difference!
A lot of these things are just a matter of personal preference. You really don't NEED very much - it's all about your lifestyle and what works for you and the baby. The only things that really irk me are things that are just blatantly unwise - like random carseat attachments that will void your warranty and fire-hazardous wipe-warmers.
I think a lot of "waste" is generated by overexcited parents and families who go bat-crap-crazy before the baby is there and buy every product ever thought of "just in case." For a lot of these things, you really can wait. Yes, your baby needs clothes. But not every cute outfit you see, plus every cute outfit your friends and family sees. Sure, you want your nursery to look cute. But your kid could care less about your having found the perfect $35 accent pillows for your rocker.
You should also be careful about what you discount just because they didn't work for other families. I nannied for a family whose baby HATED her bumbo, and so it was a total waste for them. But my coworker's baby adores hers. It's her own personal Disneyland. You just never know. Lots of people say not to bother with a specialty diaper pail - but we'll be getting the diaper genie because I happen to find them really useful. My cats can knock over and get into step-cans, and I'm not interested in cleaning that up. Bottle sanitizers - I think they're pointless, but if they give you peace of mind, then they're not a waste for you.
Just honestly think about what you might actually USE while you're registering. It's really easy to get caught up in the "they make it, so I must need it" frenzy.

"regular bumpers" are the only bumpers most people have ever seen ;p They're the cute padded ones that come with bedding sets.
Here are some breathable ones. - https://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/187-8782453-4340038?asin=B0015V3NPM&AFID=Froogle_df&LNM=|B0015V3NPM&CPNG=home&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001
I should note that lots of people use regular ones and their babies are perfectly fine - but there's been enough research done that suggests a risk that I don't think it's worth taking a chance, especially since there are other options.
Breathables aren't as "cute" or "padded" - but they will keep your LO's limbs from getting stuck in the bars, which is my main concern.

I actually had a hamper in each place where I would be keeping the baby for any period of time - so downstairs, and in our room. I wanted his clothes separate because they had to be washed so much more often. Granted, it doesn't have to be one of the fancy schmancy nursery ones.
I disagree with your sister's comment on the bouncies. If I could go back in time to before my first was born, I would have had my husband take every bouncy out, set it up, and put in the batteries, so it's ready if I need it. Better yet, just borrow lots from friends or buy them on craigslist.
Unnecessary items: cute newborn clothes, sleep positioners, the sensor thingies that parents buy to allegedly warn them if the baby stops breathing (they're waaaay too sensitive, based on convos with people I know who had them), travel systems (just buy the stroller frame or the stroller you want with an infant seat converter).
In general, I found Baby Bargains to be a great guide on what's necessary and what's not.
Can you tell me more on the warranty void if you use a bundle me? I didn't know that. Thanks!
Because every car seat manufacture says in their manual not to use after market items. Bundle me, harness covers (unless they come with your car seat), head pillows (unless they come with your car seat). Anything added to your car seat makes your car seat unsafe.

I think it's great to hear other ideas/opinions on this stuff, but keep in mind this is all SUCH personal preference. Things I hated, other people loved. And vice versa.
That said, my contribution:
I agree that the Baby Bjorn is pointless. That design isn't good for the baby (especially boy babies) and it quickly gets uncomfortable for the parents, too. Get a quality carrier like the Ergo, and you'll be more likely to use it (just ask the 12-24 board... it's a coveted item!) We still use ours all the time, very comfortably, and Lyla's 26 lbs. We'll also use a Moby this time around, for the early days.
I absolutely need a hamper in Lyla's room. We wash her clothes separately, and it would be a huge pain to carry her stuff out to our bedroom every single time we change her clothes (which is a lot... babies/toddlers are messy!)
And I splurged on a nicer diaper bag, that has stayed relatively nice. I'm not really into the crazy prints of PPB or anything that screams baby, and carrying a nice bag was just a nice little pick-me-up on those days where everything was crazy and felt out of control. Just a personal thing.
Also, don't rule the BundleMe out completely! We lived in the city and could not have survived without ours for our stroller/bassinet. We walked everywhere, so if I needed to go to the grocery store or CVS in 20 degree weather, that was the only way to keep Lyla warm.
I wouldn't get a travel system. The strollers are heavy and bulky! I'd get an infant car seat and then a lightweight stroller that you can use with an infant seat. We got the Peg Perego Aria stroller and I think it is 9 lbs. I can pick it up and open it with one hand while holding my toddler in the other. Some people choose to get a Snap n' Go stroller and then an umbrella stroller like a McClaren for with the baby is older.
I second the recommendation of the book Baby Bargains. I checked it out of the library.
Haha, totally agree.
Both DH and my sister in law are allergic to Dreft. Just fyi. We're going to just using regular detergent for the whole family and change if needed.
I agree with getting an ergo instead of a Bjorn. We had one with DD and bought the infant insert so I could wear her on the front of me when she was little. We used that until she was about 7mos old and hten put it away for awhile because she didn't like only facing me and we used the stroller alot more. However now, we use the ERGO alot when we travel via airplane or go to some sort of festival or something and she is on my back in the ergo and she LOVES it.
DD only used the bumbo for a few weeks. She sat up early around 4.5 mos but she liked the bumbo...buy one of those used and you can easily sanitize it.
I actually do have a laundry basket for DD that I keep in her closet. In the beginning blowouts (especially if you're breastfeeding) are a common everyday occurence...or was in my house anyway
So keeping her clothes separate was key and also having enough variety of cheaper clothes I didn't mind if they got stained (carter's, oshkosh) were always go to brands that hold up extremely well.
DD went through 6 different bottle types until we figured out she wanted LATEX nipples rather than the silicone. She wasn't a paci baby so we never gave her those or bought many of them. With her going to daycare, we found the drop in playtex bottles to be the easiest and got the latex orthotic nipples.
We also didn't buy a high chair, but instead got her the Fisher Price space saver chair. It can sit on a regular chair and for us that was kitchen stools since that's where we ate regularly. in the early days we were able to recline it back some and as she grew, take the tray off and pull her up to the counter with us. By 18mos, she was sitting by herself on the counter stool with no issues and so the space saver has been put away for now.
We did not buy a really heavy or bulky travel system...went with the gracco metrolite and it's still the stroller we use on a regular basis...light and easy to get in and out of the car.
Our hospital would not allow us to put any aftermarket things on the carseats...no head rest other than what came with the carseat and no bundle me when we were taking her home.
We bought a cute pink basket that sits on the dresser/changing table and holds diapers, diaper cream, vaseline and wipes. My sister on the other hand just put things in the top drawer of the dresser/changing table
Just an opinion about buying clothes hampers for the baby's room/elsewhere...
If you currently use one central hamper or keep a few in one central place, you might be better off to keep doing that. If you currently have a couple hampers in a few diff rooms in the house, then def buy one for the baby's room. If you plan to wash baby clothes separate from your clothes, def buy a separate hamper. If you or DH regularly get grease, dye, or other harsh chemicals on your clothes, or if one of you works in a health care field or at a hospital/medical office, you might want to wash the baby's clothes separately.
If you use a central hamper for everything, w/e is on your and DH's clothes can end up on the baby's. I found out this out the hard way when industrial inks on DH's work clothes started making me break out in hives. The ink didn't come out of his clothes in the wash, and when I washed our clothes together the residue got on mine, even though it didn't stain. I started washing his work clothes separately from all our other clothes, and the problem went away. I also have to use separate laundry bags for his work clothes.
Its the same thing for exersaucers and walkers as it is for jumpers. I talked to our pedi about it and she was fine with us using these items but limiting the amout of time our daughter spent in them.
I am one who took the 2 mins to toss them in the stacker. I hate bags sitting around my home and I did not have the room on the dresser for a bag of diapers. It took 2 mins to sitck them in the stacker not like it was 10 hrs to change them over.
All of these things are such personal choices. We didn't register for a ton of stuff I didn't think we needed (bouncer, swing, etc) and we ended up having to buy it later. Babies are so different and you never know when you'll be hit with an issue you weren't expecting (for us it was reflux).
That said, I kept almost everything in its original packaging until we used it. That way, I was able to return a lot of things we didn't use for store credit (Target, BRU) to spend on stuff we did end up needing.
You will always end up needing stuff you were sure you didn't need and never using stuff you were sure you did need. It's a crapshoot, honestly.
The BRU around here has white ones made by safety first, they are worthless
Too funny! I like my diaper hamper because I hung it on the edge of the changing table! I didn't have closets in Germany which is where DS was born! Now it's hanging in his closet and I still like having it!
As for a separate hamper. I'm all for that as well! lol I don't have some cutesie one but I have a separate one because of washing baby clothes with baby detergent.
Agreed with the bulb syringe! Try to get 2!!! Store bought ones are horrible!
I liked the Baby Bjorn early on but DS outgrew it quickly and it bothered my back once he put on any weight! Got the Ergo after that and LOVE IT!!! There is a separate infant insert you can purchase for the little ones. Only downfall is they can't face out and that was what was great about the Bjorn.
The second time around I am not getting bedding set. Only sheets and breathable bumper. No need for anything else.
I got $5 hamper for dirty clothes from target, just generic one, kept it in the closet anyways.
Definitely no diaper champ or anything to store dirty diapers. Grocery bags or the special little bags for diapers. I toss them in the garage trash right a way.
