Postpartum Depression

Where to get help?

I am nine months PP and finally facing the fact that I need a little help with my anxiety.  Should I still contact my OB or would I go to my PCP?

Re: Where to get help?

  • I would call my OB first.  If they aren't responsive (which they should be), I would then call my PCP.

I'm sorry that you are feeling like this, but good for you for getting help.  Things will get better!

  • I am in a similar situation. I finally made the call to my OB last week, who referred me to a therapist.  My first appointment is tomorrow.  I am not sure what I am feeling is PPD but the doctor seemed to think it was a good place to start (going to the therapist) and go from there.  I am very anxious about the whole situation and am feeling more like a failure all the time.

  • Hi there...I know when I sought out treatment, I was able to do it straight through my insurance. On the back of my medical card there was a 1-800 number that connected me straight to the mental health treatment approval line. I did not have to go to my doctor first. I had my approval/authorization in about 15 minutes and was in with a psychiatrist the next day.

You can also go to your OB or PCP, but a psychiatrist, IMHO is going to be able to evaluate your situation and prescribe the proper treatment for you better than an OB or PCP. It is their specialty. My treatment was combined therapy with medication and it has been very effective.

  • I would definitely talk to your OB first. They tend to have several names on hand of doctors that they recommend for your exact situation!
