Just to let you know......esp fans of Dr Luke.
The "green journal" is the main publication for ACOG. It's where all of the big, credible studies in ob/gyn are published. In this week's edition, there is a study agreeing with the 2009 Institute of Medicine weight gain for pregnancy (Dr Luke's guidelines). This is a big deal! It's a fairly decent study as far as study design goes.
So it's the first time I've seen something in the green journal about this and hopefully it will open up some eyes about weight gain for twin pregnancies. For you Dr Luke fans....there ya go!
Re: New article on weight gain
I've personally never read it.....I just know a lot of people on here like it or at least have found it a valuable resource. I wouldn't have needed her eating guide for weight gain since I've gained the appropriate amount by eating when I was hungry. If I actually followed her advice....I'm be huge by now!
The study did make me feel better about the weight.
I reached her advice....for the first 20 pounds...but with all my nausea and vomiting....all of1st and 2nd tri, I couldn't achieve her weights to this current week. I'm trying super hard.... but feel guilty I'm behind on weight gain.
At 29 weeks, I have only gained 36. I wish it was more.
Thank u. There are 4 docs in the practice. the one today was very nice and said "you are doing good".... but 2 weeks ago.... the other doc told me I was way behind. I was so discouraged, I didn't even look back in Dr. Lukes book.
She made me feel like such a failure. She said I had to be moved up to "more frequent visits'...to check on my weight gain. I was even drinking Ensure's to gain....but failed my 2 glucose tests....so have GD (prob. from all that darn Ensure)....and she said I couldn't drink them anymore. Then I asked..."what about Glucerna...? it's a drink with less sugar for diabetics....and she said no. Ugh!
This is really great to hear! I liked her book - not for the exact dietary guidelines per se - but more so because I feel like it gave me a green light to EAT and GAIN and feel GOOD about it.
Seems obvious, but having the science to back it up in her book has really empowered me.
Ditto !
I tore into my MFM's office like a mad woman. "Did you get your green yet? Did you read the twin article?!?!" Ha - they probably thought I was insane. I felt vindicated. My starting BMI was 25.something. They told me to gain 25 lbs (one told me 30 was fine). And I laughed at them both. I knew that was both unlikely and probably not the best science. I trust them both but that doesn't mean I will agree with everything.
Tritto!
(As I did when I delivered healthy 6.10 and 6.7 babies at 37w6d.
I know there are no guarantees but I wanted to do whatever I could to increase my odds!)
I followed her guidelines (ate all the recommended protein and about 2/3 in the other categories and gained about 2 lbs/wk after 12w) and I remember when I saw my practice's MFM around 28w he made a snide comment about how, "You don't need to be gaining this much weight." I feel vindicated now, too!
That's crazy! I'm so glad YOU were vindicated, too!
that's great!
while i found dr. luke's actual diet to be insane - i did think her guidelines for weight gain were very smart... I followed them- and went to term with big healthy babies (sure- a lot of that was luck- the term part- but having big boys I credit to following Dr. Luke's food guidelines)

My blog * We made the national news!
I was told to gain 20 lbs with a singleton my BMI was 23.5
& when we found out there were two, my OB told me 35-40 was my target weight gain..
Im at 20lbs so far, I think I'll be at 35 by the time I deliver these boys
I wish my MFMs hadn't told me not to eat any extra with twins! I could have started so much sooner! Now here I am stuffing my face trying to catch up since reading Dr Luke's book!! But it's easy to stuff my face cuz I'm hungry alllllll the time!
Can't believe so many docs out there are CLUELESS about multiples pregnancies.
