Since it's "pedi" day...

How did you go about picking your LO's pedi?

I ended up calling my old pedi's office.  DH just happened to go to the same office as me (but different doc)...weird right?

I set up an appointment to meet with her and just fell in love!  I had appointments to meet with a couple others but called to cancel right after meeting her.  LOL!

Re: Since it's "pedi" day...

  • We went to the pedi in town. I know two people who go (well went there) and one liked it and the other one didn't. Well, I ended up hating the pedi. We switched after DS' 4 month check-up. I was tired of being treated like I didn't know anything and I didn't like the way they handled other thing too.

When I switched I asked people that I work with. I also asked DH's Mom's cousin b/c she is a school nurse and I wanted to see if she knew of any good places.

We switched to the one everyone recommended and I couldn't be happier!

  • Our pedi (who just moved to Hawaii and I'm sad) was part of the GP office the DH and I went to.  We talked to her one day and just fell in love with her.  Her style fits so well with us that it was a perfect fit.  She took such good care of our boys and was always willing to see them, whether I had an appt or not.  Somedays DC would call and Eli would have a fever (thanks to his latest ear infection) and when I would pick him up he just didn't look right.  I'd take him straight over and she'd get him in, no matter what.  And they're a no walk-in clinic.

Some friends of our recommended another group of physicians (all pedis) and we checked them out.  Turns out their members of the same group as our GP, just at a different office location.  So it worked out well.  The boys weren't new patients so we didn't have to wait to get a first appt like you usually do when you're new.  And with Eli's ears, not being able to get in immediately is never good!

  • Our pedi was highly recommended by a close friend of mine at work.  We love our pedi!

I was given a list of pedis in the medical group by my OBGYN when I was pregnant.  She highlighted the ones she thought were good and I called them.  Only 1 was accepting new patients.  We met with him at an "orientation" he does for expectant parents and we liked him.  Done deal.

  • He is our niece's pedi. She's six months older than B, so SIL had a few appointments under her belt when it came time for us to pick someone and she recommended him. We figured we'd meet him and if we didn't like him we'd be no worse off than before. Turns out he's really nice, okay with delayed/alternative vaccine schedules, and doesn't mind B being vegan. Those were our big concerns, and since he fit what we were looking for (or as close as we knew we'd get around here) we stuck with him. It didn't hurt that it turns out he's one of the most respected pedis in the area and the head of the clinic, though we didn't know that at first.

  • Our pedi was recommended to me by my OB. Before DD was born my dr. asked if I had a picked a pedi yet and because I hadn't she gave me a list of pedi's and said that there were 2 specific ones that she highly recommended. Both were younger (practicing about 5 years) and mothers and she thought I would "click" with them.

Neither of the pedis do "interviews," so I just picked one and it turned out that she's WONDERFUL!

  • I picked the one closest to my house that was an individual practice. Less drs, less sick kids in the waiting room:) I got lucky that he was the type of pedi I like.
  • I asked my best friend's sister who she went to and just called them up and said this is when I'm delivering :)  I like them so it worked out well.
  • I gathered recs from coworkers, and then did a couple of interviews/meet-n-greets.

I asked each of them what their favorite parenting and child development books were. I picked a pedi that seemed to fall in line with my philosophies (as in being more AP-minded). It has worked out pretty well so far, but I'm also in the camp that rarely listens to my pedi's parenting "advice".  I'd rather she just make sure Ella is growing and developing properly with no medical issues, and then I'm out.

My sister is a nurse in the pediatric ward/maternity floor at our local hospital.  She knows many pedi's (since they go to the hosptial when babies are born) and when I got the list of the providers of our insurance I asked my sister and she gave me a few recommendations off of the list.  I then made appt's with them to interview them (while I was pregnant) and picked the pedi we have now.  I actually like the other pedi at our pedis office better than the main pediatrician.  Shes a woman (and a mother of 3 boys), and she seems to be more understanding and easier to talk to. The main pedi is a man and also a father.
