We needed to get a copy of DH's birth cert. Went to the county building where we got DS's (just had to pay a fee, fill out a form and we got DS's). Well DH's father was never around and his mom did not list a father at all on the birth cert. Because of this, the lady at the county building said that the birth cert's of illegitimate children born before 1978 aren't kept locally, they are kept at the state capital and we have to fill out a different form and mail out for DH's birth cert. So they make you feel like an outcast. I remember having issues too when we went to get our marriage license. I went in without DH and they questioned it for about 5-10 min about the fact that his father was not listed on the birth cert, and was I SURE about that etc

Re: well, isnt that just nice (nbr)
I just want to say that I hate the use of that word to describe children who have unmarried parents. It makes it sound like something is wrong with the child.
Synonyms for illegitimate include contraband, illegal, illicit, invalid, unauthorized, unsanctioned, and wicked. Should these words ever be used to describe a child?
Wow Mrs. K Thats amazing I have always hated that term too but I never looked up what else it meant
that makes me sad!
OP sorry youre dealing with Drama getting his birth cert, I had some drama with my passport because I had similar issues obtaining a certified copy... it was irritating as all get out..
I couldnt agree with you more!!! I think thats what bothered me the most! The actual meaning of the word isnt bad but it just sounds awful!!
And why should "illegitimate" childrens' records be kept separately from "legitimate" children? It's really crazy.
I am sorry you are having to deal with this crap.
It sounds like they only did that before 1978 (DH was born in 76) but still.......what a PITA
