2nd Trimester

well, isnt that just nice (nbr)

We needed to get a copy of DH's birth cert. Went to the county building where we got DS's (just had to pay a fee, fill out a form and  we got DS's).  Well DH's father was never around and his mom did not list a father at all on the birth cert.  Because of this, the lady at the county building said that the birth cert's of illegitimate children born before 1978 aren't kept locally, they are kept at the state capital and we have to fill out a different form and mail out for DH's birth cert.  So they make you feel like an outcast.  I remember having issues too when we went to get our marriage license.  I went in without DH and they questioned it for about 5-10 min about the fact that his father was not listed on the birth cert, and was I SURE about that etc

  • I just want to say that I hate the use of that word to describe children who have unmarried parents. It makes it sound like something is wrong with the child.

Synonyms for illegitimate include contraband, illegal, illicit, invalid, unauthorized, unsanctioned, and wicked.  Should these words ever be used to describe a child?

  • And why should "illegitimate" childrens' records be kept separately from "legitimate" children?  It's really crazy.

I am sorry you are having to deal with this crap.

It sounds like they only did that before 1978 (DH was born in 76) but still.......what a PITA

  • We had a similar issue with my DH because he is adopted. I guess back in the early 70's when his adoption was finalized they didn't issue certified birth certificates with the childs new name, just the pretty decorative ones. When he tried to get a drivers license in AZ last year they told him he would have to get a certified copy. He went online to CA website you can order your birth certificate from, 2 days later we get a call from the clerk asking if he was adopted, when my DH answered yes the clerk sighed and said this is gonna take awhile. DH had to fill out a bunch of forms and it took 6wks to get it instead of the normal 3-7 days.

  • Oh, I totally LOVE beauracratic BS!!!  I went to get my address changed on my Drivers Liscense a few weeks ago and they would not let me get it b/c I didn't have the proper identification.... I knew they had changed the laws so I went online to make sure I had everything I needed.  It said I needed proof of social security number, 2 forms of ID, and 2 proofs of residency.  I had all but the SSN- we just moved and I couldn't find my card, a pay stub, or anything else they had listed.  I have a US government issued military ID card (granted it is expired) and took that b/c it has my SSN on it.  Guess what they absolutely refuse to accept as proof?!  A FRICKEN US MILITARY GOVERNMENT ISSUED ID CARD!!!  It doesn't matter if it is expired or you got it the day before- they do not accept it!!! WTF?!
