So confused. — The Bump
Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

So confused.

I went in yesterday for my first appointment.  Based on my chart, I calculate that yesterday I should have been between 8 weeks - 8 weeks 3 days along.  The u/s measured me at only 6 weeks 4 days.  There was no heartbeat, but I believe she did say there was some kind of heart "movement."

The NP called today and said that my hCG level is 58,078, which she said would date me at 6 weeks 5 days.  It was my understanding that due to the wide range of what is considered to be "normal" hCG levels, it was not possible to date a pregnancy based on only one beta draw.  I go back tomorrow for another draw, and have an appointment with the doctor scheduled for Friday.

I don't know what to think.  On the one hand, it seems like my first beta number is very high, but at this stage, I know we should definitely be seeing a heartbeat.  I am positive about my dates.  DH and I have not BD since May 15th, which is the day I O'd, based on my chart.

In my heart I feel like it's over.  My symptoms have been decreasing over the past few days.  But with such a high beta number, I can't help but feel just a little bit hopeful.

Thanks for listening.  I have heard how wonderful and supportive you ladies are.  I never thought that I would be here.  What a nightmare.

I would really appreciate any thoughts you would share.

Re: So confused.

  • I am so sorry that you are having to play this waiting game. It is not fair or fun and I hope that you get your answers soon.  I had a blighted ovum so my HCG continued to rise.  It was 85,000 when I was supposed to be 10 weeks and fell quickly each week after that.  I know that one draw is definitely not enough with how wide of a range that the numbers can be for each woman:(  I hope and pray that there was a mistake and your baby is healthy, however, if things turn out differently we are all here and have experienced your pain and will be here for you when you need us!  Many T&P's coming your way right now:) ((HUGS))
So excited for our little blessing:)
  • I am so sorry. The same thing happened to me, with nearly the same dates. I was 100% sure of my date of conception because I was charting, and the only way for my baby to really be 6w was if I had conceived after I got my +HPT, which isn't possible, obviously.

I had 2 ultrasounds confirming the loss, then a third where my OB saw some sort of movement/hb. I waited another week and then she finally confirmed a loss again. I hope your story turns out better than mine. In the horrible week when I was waiting, I have heard an equal number of people who had my experience of loss, and also those who ended up with a perfectly healthy baby in the end. This even happened to my OB and her daughter is 7 now.

It will be really hard to wait, but try to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. That was the best advice I received. It's a very difficult situation to be in and I'm so sorry you have to go through it. Waiting is awful but you want to be 100% sure that the baby is gone before you make any final decisions. If you can, you might try to get a second opinion, as doctor's office ultrasounds and the skill of the person measuring can often lead to results that seem off. I hope your baby catches up or the measurements or dates were just wrong. Keep us posted!

  • The more I think about it, the more confused I am.  This just doesn't add up.

I know that most of you are probably not doctors, and that I have to wait until Friday to find out.  I just have a sneaking suspicion that we won't get a definitive answer on Friday.

If the baby stopped growing 2 weeks ago, then how is my hCG still so high?  58,078 would be freakishly high for 6 weeks and 4 days, right?  So then how is it possible that it has been declining for 2 weeks, and is still that high?

  • I'm sorry you are going through this.  I can't answer your questions, but I hope for the best for you.
