3rd Trimester

Eviction notice has been served!

Had my 40 week appt today.  Still only a fingertip dialated but went from 25% effaced to 75% effaced since last week.  Baby has dropped even lower since last week as well.

If I don't go into labor on my own we will be checking into the hospital on Tuesday, 7/6, at 8pm and having Cytotec (sp?) inserted to finish thinning out my cervix.  They will wake me up early Wednesday morning and if my cervix has fully effaced then they will start the Pitocen.

Doctor says if all goes well we will have a baby by Wednesday evening!!  We are very excited to just have an end date in sight.

Does anyone have any experience with Cytotec and how it works?

Also, is it true that contractions are worse on Pitocen then when they occur naturally?

TIA!!

  • I have no answer for you unfortunately, but GL.  Looks like you are giving birth on my birthday, yayyy!

  • how exciting!!! i think i'll be induced by Monday/Tuesdayish too :)

from what I have heard/read pitocin just means you skip the first stage of labor and go straight into the painful part - so it's not necessarily MORE painful, you just don't have the gradual build up of contractions

  • Good luck!  They set my induction date today for 7/10.  I'm in the same boat you are as far as dilation and effacement.
  • Sigh.  We have a date set for the 7-8th if nothing happens in the meantime.  I'm terrified.  I do NOT want to be induced!!  We have no option for pain relief so no gradual build up of pressure/pain might be too much for me.  Ugh.

  • Pitocin brings contractions that are more frequent and typically stronger as well.  So they are supposed to progress you (ie should help you dilate because you are contracting more) faster than you would on your own.  I had pitocin with my first pregnancy and to be honest, it was quite an experience.  I was on it for about 10 hrs before I could get my epidural because I wasn't dilating so that was a long time to deal with frequent and strong contractions.  Eventaully it did work though and I got the epidural and delivered my son several hours later.  That was just my experience, of course its totally individual, but yes, it does bring more frequent and strong contractions.

I am being induced starting tomorrow night and will start with pitocin so it will be similar to your experience.   Good luck - you will do great!

  • I don't want to freak you out, but Cytotec is so dangerous. It is not approved by the FDA to be used in pregnant patients, and it is even in the pregnancy category X! There is a high risk of uterine rupture, and there have been quite a few moms and babies who do not make it through delivery. Once the Cytotec is inserted, it dissolves so quickly, and in cases of hyperstimulation of the uterus, it cannot be removed. Cervidil and Pitocin can also cause hyperstimulaion, but both can be discontinues immediately.

I say this not to scare you, but to raise awareness. Doctors do not inform patients of these risks. I would research this. My midwife wanted to use Cytotec on me, but I refused. I knew that I would go into labor on my own, and I did. I was able to get through my 2nd drug free delivery. And yes, Pitocin does cause contractions to be much more intense, and much earlier. My first 2 deliveries were induced with Pitocin, and it is so much easier when you're allowed to go into labor naturally. I know it is so hard to wait, but check into this. The facts will probably floor you. Good luck with your laboe, though. Either way, you will soon be holding your bundle of joy!

  • I have also heard some scary stuff about cytotec and increased uterine rupture.  If I were you I would ask some questions/ do a little research.

ETA: I had posted a link on an article but I just noticed how old the article was.

  • I am being induced on the 8th and they will start with Cytotec as well if I have not had anymore progress.  I have done a lot of research and I am not too worried about it.  I do plan to ask if Cervidil is available, however if it isn't I will move forward with the Cytotec.  In the research i have read it does cause an increase risk in uterine rupture just the same as cervidil and pitocin can.  It is given in very small doses to avoid hyper stimulation of the uterus.  Most of what I have read as well talks about woman who have previously had a c-section or uterine surgery.  I know one of the pp's said it was not FDA approved and I just wanted to add that there are a lot of medications out there that people receive on a regular bases that are not FDA approved for what they are used for.  There are side effects to everything you just have to decide what you are comfortable with.  The causes of death by Cytotec are no higher then with Pitocin or a c-section. They are all invasive procedures.
