Puking during labor?

Okay, so this may be really stupid but I totally have a thing against throwing up.  I absolutely hate it... always have... (my mom literally used to have to make me open my mouth to get it all out when I was little and had the flu!)  I've really been blessed thus far in my pregnancy, I have not thrown up one time!!!  Does anyone have any tips to try and avoid this yuckiness during labor?

Re: Puking during labor?

  • Nope.  The only thing I can think that may spare you is to have your epi prior to transition. That was when I was throwing up h emost with DS was in transition.

I doubt there is anything you can do about it.

I did hear that you are more likely to puke during labor if you had bad morning sickness during your pregnancy.

Don't know how true that is.

  • Get an epidural :)

I didn't puke. Didn't feel anything after 5cm. My sister didn't have the epi (progressed too fast) and lost her lunch.

  • I've heard sucking on sour candies works fairly well.

  •  Get an epidural. I didn't puke at all during labor, I actually felt wonderful the whole time.

This...I threw up both times around 7 or 8 cm.  Right before I begged for an epi.

I am totally luring BUT I had an epi and when I was getting really close to pushing time, aka transition, I thought I was gonna puke, but didn't. My OB said it was because even though I had the epi my brain still thought I was in pain and was responding. I was also shaking like crazy. Very weird feeling. What helped me not vom, besides not having anything in my tummy TO vom, was taking it easy on the water/ice chips. Small sips, little mouthfuls. Other than that I had no control, if it was gonna happen there wasn't anything I could do.

Don't count on being able to suck on candies... I was allowed 2 life savers in my 25 hour labor- about 18 at the hospital.

I bet if you are not a puker than you won't puke. Seems to be how it always works.

  • Thanks ladies... I guess I'll have to just see how it goes and try not to stress about it!

  • Try not to eat much before the epi and then wait to eat afterwards.  I didnt fine with the first part as I went into the hospital in the middle of the night and got my epi in the morning, but I ate right after I had him and got soo nauseous, and it was only from a few grapes.  If I didnt stop eating right away I would have hurled everywhere.  About 1.5 hours later I could eat just fine!

This post is the first time I've ever heard of getting sick during labor.  I got sick daily with DS until 16 weeks, but never had the urge to get sick during labor.  After labor I guzzled half of a bottle of sprite and that came up about 30 seconds later, but it was no big deal.

Yikes! I hope that's not true or my guts will be on the floor! I spent 5 months barfing daily. EWWWWWW.....

  • I vomited twice during labor with DD#1, both times while I was pushing.  My epidural had worn off by that point, and it was definitely the pain that made me puke.
  • Lurking...

I am not a fan of puking either. I was in labor 24 hours with an epidural at 4cm that didn't take (lucky me!) my bp tanked after an attempt at a 2nd epidural and I had an emergency csection. No nausea or vomiting at all during labor (and it was INTENSE as I had no desire to ever go at it drug free). Only felt like puking when my bp dropped a second time in the OR, and they gave me zofran and I felt much better real quick.

Best advice...don't think about it. If you are gonna puke you are gonna puke and chances are you won't even care at that point (I wouldn't have). But remember, you can talk yourself into being sick. So relax...good luck!

  • I am not a puker and I had an epidural, but right at 7 cm I was throwing up. I was also a scheduled induction so I hadn't had anything to eat since midnight the night before.  The one thing they allowed me, a popsicle,  didn't last long.

So I don't know if there is any for sure thing you can do to not get sick, but just think about how it is all worth it in the end!

  • I too am traumatized by puking.  Someone gave me a popsicle during labor and I spent the rest of the time throwing up red liquid in front of DH, it was awesome.
  • I had a relatively puke-free pregnancy, yet threw up a ton during labor (I progressed really quickly from 2-6 cm).  Certain smells were setting me off.  My advice: small sips of water and mints to suck on.
