Mamas come in re: gliders/rockers

Do you have a one in your LO's room?  Is it an essential item?  I've been looking around and don't love the older style/traditional gliders like so:

image

I would love something like this (but at nearly $800.00 it just won't happen);

image

We were even considering just an IKEA poang chair;

image

But they pretty much start at $200 plus ... for an IKEA chair Tongue Tied

Anyway, just weighing our options and thinking about budget.  Also wondering if we need a chair in the baby room, although I'm sure it would be nice to have one.  TIA Smile

  • Jack's room is too small so I thought about getting something for our room but like you I didn't like the wood look so I started looking at an upholstered option but didn't want to shell out the $$$.  I sometimes wish I had one, but it's definitely not essential for us.  I set up a "nursing nook" in the room I hang out in most - just an overstuffed chair/ottoman with a table right next to it for my kindle, books for jack, extra burp cloths, etc.

I think if Jack was sleeping in his room I would definitely want something in there or near there because in our house it would be a big pain to go to him in the middle of the night and not have a place to sit in that area of the house.

  • We have a rocker with a kick out. Different than a glider with an ottoman. Basically, it's a big comfy chair that I can nurse in and rock in. It's from Best Chairs and was like $770 or something, but MIL bought it for us.

IMO, you do not need a "rocker glider" sold in the baby stores. All you need is a comfy place to nurse or give a bottle. It helps if the chair glides or rocks. But any rocker would work.... You can get one on Craigslist. You don't necessarily need a "baby" rocker. Know what I mean?

For me, it helps to have this chair in the nursery because I can nurse her and then put her in her crib. I think it might be distracting to nurse her in another room, then walk to her room and put her down. Also, for middle of the night feedings, it was helpful to be in the same room. And for dream fees, it's definitely helpful to be in the same room!

Obviously if you are co-sleeping then.... Totally different... Will leave it up to those mommas to chime in on if you need one in that case.

  • We have a fully upholstered Best Chair glider/recliner and I LOVE that thing.  It was the best splurge ever.  When Kaya wouldn't let me put her down to nap I napped in the recliner with her on me.  Now I nurse her in it (it's in her room) and I can lean back and fall asleep while she nurses.  Seriously, best thing ever.  I think we paid about $600.

Totally this, btw.  But even when we were bed sharing, I used it during the day to nurse, or when people were over and I wanted to nurse in private.

  • Good question Tara! I was also looking into this. We were at my friend's house the other day and she has a glider. I told DH I want one (or anything similar) Stick out tongue. I also don't want to shell out $$ so we may try to find some comfy chair at "non-baby" stores.
  • Thanks for all the input.  I think we will be getting one, I'll just have to keep looking and maybe we'll find a nice one on sale Wink

  • Tara we bought a glider like the first one pictured.

Elyse has slept in her crib since her 4th day home and I love having the glider in her room.  I use it for nursing, comforting and hanging out.  Our nursery is quite small so we don't use the ottoman.

We got one pretty similar to the one in the picture from Costco.ca for about $250.  The nice thing about costco is that their return policy is fantastic and they delivered it to our door.

One thing to look for in a chair is something that you can lay your head back on.  The kind that only go to your shoulders would be uncomfy when you're exhausted.

BTW I saw a girl in Save On Foods yesterday that looked a lot like you!

You did? :)  That's too funny!

You know what, the more I look at the first photo I don't mind it.  I think I keep thinking about the one my brother and SIL bought.  When I sat in it, it felt so stiff (it's fairly similar to the first photo).  It also didn't recline so it felt like you were sitting too upright.  I know I didn't want one like that after I sat in theirs :)  My SIL is very petite though so maybe she's comfy in it?  Costco is awesome with their free shipping and return policy, I couldn't agree with you more.

  • we got a glider like in the first photo we found it on craigslist for $100 and we use it a lot for feedings and to get him sleepy before bed.  To me that is one items we cant live without.
  • My friend has one like the one in the first photo and it's SO COMFY!!! I used it at her house before to nurse (during a party) and it was AWESOME!! I like our all-upholstered one, but I think I didn't give that other style a chance. They are very nice also. FWIW.

Plus, I think I read that you can now get Little Castle glider rockers at Target... Yup, just checked. $450-600, which is a very good price for an all-upholstered Little Castle glider rocker (usually run around $900-1000).

This, totally.  The only way he would sleep for the first 6 wks was ON me, so I was in the rocker/recliner a lot of the day and night.  The ottoman was helpful too, b/c DS's room is so small, the recliner doesn't recline, lol.

  • We have a glider much like the first pic in the nursery.  Or, at least, we will....someday!  It was delivered broken about a month ago, and it had to be reordered.  but I will say that Buy Buy Baby has excellent customer service, and (since the new one will take a while, and may not be here before baby) gave us a loaner chair in the meantime.

Since my LO isn't here yet, I can't comment on how useful it'll be, but I suspect, a lot!  I love rocking chairs, and like the idea of being able to nurse him, rock him, and put him to bed all in one room (once he grows out of the co-sleeper in our room).  And also have a private place to nurse him in the first few weeks when the house will be a steady stream of people.

  • We have an ugly, green lazy boy that someone gave us for free.  As much as I hate that thing, it has rocked Ashton to sleep more times than I care to count and I slept in it for the first week or so after Ashton as born.

Since we didn't have room in his room, we have the chair in the living room. I'd prefer it to be in his room, especially when MH is watching tv and I'm try to rock a baby to sleepTongue Tied.

Could you look on craigslist for the type you really like? I def. recommend a glider/rocker though.

  • Tara I totally skimmed the part that said you didn't really like it Embarrassed that's what I get for bumping with E on my lap.

I nurse E in a  rocker reclincer during the day and I do find it more comfy.  I don't use the rocking function I have it reclined and the foot rest out.

  • Without my knowing, Brian scanned this with the scan gun when we set up our regsitry at BRU.  It's only $199.99 for both the glider and ottoman.  He said it was comfy, but I didn't get to sit in it.  I'll give it a test run next time we're at BRU.

I have found that these types of chairs vary greatly!  I sat in about 20 of them before I found the one I fell in love with.  I needed a taller back so I could set my head back.  And lumbar support!  They don't all have it.  And mine does recline.  Dutailier lets you customize what kind of features you want (recline, swivel, etc.).  I will say that they are quite expensive though.  We were lucky to have ours purchased as a gift for us.

  • I have the Monte Luca glider (similar to the second picture) and I loooove it!! Like PP, I've used it almost everyday to nurse and rock Mason to sleep. Make sure you get one with a high back so you can rest your head while nursing. I also didn't like the traditional rocking chairs with the wood, the Monte glider is actually very slim and modern so it will definitely be used in the living room afterwards.
  • We have something similar to the first one you posted (it's an odd one though - it looks like an old school glider but has rocking action - it was a genuinely old rocker that originally belonged to a friend's grandmother).

In a way we've used it less than I expected (it was very difficult to nurse 2 babies on so I tended to use the couch in the living room or our bed instead), BUT when Dash was doing his whole "I don't want to go to sleep so I'm going to scream for a solid hour" every night after every feed, having somewhere in their room to sit and rock him was invaluable, and I think I'd have lost my mind in those first difficult weeks without it!

Mine was a freebie from a friend that we painted and reupholstered, but I'd definitely still have bought one if we didn't have one given to us. Try looking on Craigslist if you want to keep it budget friendly - I think Lori (Married2MrWright) got a good one from there?

I'm in the minority here. I had one here that looked like your first pic on my registry from Amazon for only $125, no tax, and free shipping but that's in the US. I don't know if Amazon.ca has the same deal or not. But I ended removing it because I wasn't sure if it was a necessity and I only wanted must-have items on my registry. I don't regret it because the crib is in our room for now and our LO doesn't like sleeping in it so we're cosleeping for now and I nurse him in bed. During the day, we're all in the living room so I nurse him on the Boppy while sitting in my computer chair at my desk. I'm not sure when I would get a chance to use a glider/rocker if I had one, but they are pretty darn comfy and I like sitting in them when I'm in the stores shopping for baby stuff =)

  • We have a hand-me-down upholstered rocker.

Initially, he slept next to our bed and I nursed in bed. We recently transitioned him to the crib in his room, but I still bring him to nurse in our bed. I sometimes sit in the rocker when I'm putting him to sleep, but it doesn't get a ton of use. It's helpful, but not an essential. I probably use it more to throw clothes on than I do to nurse or rock!

  • We got a Lane Rocker/Swivel/Recliner for $50 on Craigslist.  So glad that we have it...I LIVED in it for the first 3 weeks of her life (nursing, dozing, rocking, etc.) and we use it daily.  It's not a huge chair and fits well in the room.  I'd recommend checking Craigslist, etc. for a deal rather than buying brand-new...there are usually quite a few listings for rockers, etc.  FWIW, my friends all got the rocker + ottoman option and HATED it...they said it hurt their backs when they'd nurse.  So you might keep that in mind.  I like that ours is a recliner, so if I want my feet up I can pop out the footrest, but otherwise, it doesn't take up extra space in her room.

  • i think it really just depends and there is no way to know ahead of time.  we got an upholstered rocker and ottoman...got a used one off craigslist for $150 which was a phenomenal deal...only i found after using it that if you put it on carpet (not sure about hardwood), the rocker moves from its place when you rock back/forth.  so i constantly have to adjust it.

secondly, a few weeks into nursing i developed an oversupply so nursing on my side in bed was much better for us than in a chair.  now i mostly use the rocker for pics and occasionally to rock her.  after the first few weeks i tried to get away from rocking her to sleep b/c i didn't want her to become reliant on me rocking her to sleep.

so, if i had paid full price for it (over $1100 at pottery barn) i would have been pretty upset. but since we got a deal on it and i can probably sell it and break even when we're through w/it, i'm ok with it.

the first one you pictured is really comfy actually. brent's grandma has one and i got to use it when we were there and i think that even though it isn't super modern looking, it suits its purpose and isn't a bad choice. i don't know if you have anything like craigslist in canada or if you could drive across the border and get one, but there are a ton of those types of rockers for sale on craigslist all the time.
