How do I get her to talk more???

I'm really trying to unlock the speech thing in Avery. I know it's going to be like her walking - when she's ready she is going to be making dissertation speeches...but how do I get her over the hump?

I repeat words a bazillion times, I sound out the words, I show her the object, I try to withhold what she is wanting until she makes some semblance of the word and she ends up signing "Please" for it.

Anyone have some tricks and tips I might try??? I know she CAN say many of the words I am asking her to do because I have heard her say the same type of sounds previously, but when prompted, I get nothing.

LIke "Ball" - I KNOW she can say "ba"- I've heard her babble it (bababababa) a million times...but when prompted with a ball - she just stares at me like I have lost my mind.

  • I don't have any recommendations for you because we are in the same boat. She knows what dog and ball and light and all these words and will sign some of them... but doesn't say them. She's said "bye bye" and "no no" but that is about it besides "mama" and "dada".

    I'm interested in the responses.

I don't have any recommendations but I do have a question.  In your questions/responses I've noticed a lot of baby's know how to sign things they want.  Is this something they learn at daycare or do you guys work with them on this?  I'm just curious b/c I think it's really cool that the baby's can pick up on signing for the the things they want.

I have heard sometimes when babies learn to sign, it takes them a *LITTLE* longer for them to really use words--we are in the same boat as you know. She will say words-she just won't use them--instead she resorts to screaming and pitching a little fit. We had this battle yesterday in the car for about 30 minutes with her cup--she can say "cu", she just refused.  I get SO frustrated with it--especially since most of our friends' little ones are overly advanced in their language/speech development...only a few months/days older than her and talking in sentences/carrying on conversations-ugh!

  • it's so frustrating... I guess we keep doing what we're doing and wait... she has already passed the pedi's goal of getting her to have at least 10 more words between her 18m and 2y appt...so I don't think he'll be that concerned...still just frustrating.
