Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Has anyone tasted BM AND formula?

How different do they taste? I have not tasted either but my kids won't take formula. I'm wondering if it really does taste bad. I can't imagine that it tastes so bad because most babies take it without a problem. Also, the first ingredient is sugar and milk so how bad could it be?

  • the powder formula mixed up still has a gritty, powdery "taste" but is sort of sweet and sour tasting.

BM tastes sweet and much "better" than formula.

  • A lot.  If you just taste a little formula for yourself you will see...it's kinda plastic-y tasting to me.  BM doesn't really taste like anything and is kinda sweet.

  • Formula has a floury taste to it and is not as sweet.

But does formula taste fine? Like is it edible?

  • I've never tasted BM but I've tasted all of DS's different types of formula (regular, soy, nutramigen, and neocate) and the more specialized they got the worse they tasted.

Of course it's edible. It's created for babies to eat, isn't it?

A baby who's been exclusively give breastmilk is most likely going to reject formula at first. Breastmilk and formula do not taste the same, breastmilk is sweeter and thinner, whereas formula is less sweet and a bit thicker. If you want your LOs to get used to formula, I'd suggest combining 2 ounces of already prepared formula with the breastmilk they are already being given.  So, for a 6 oz bottle, you'd have 2 oz of formula and 4 oz of breastmilk. You can slowly mess with the breastmilk/formula ratio until the bottle is completely formula. This should help them adjust to the difference in taste and texture between formula and breastmilk.

It doesn't taste bad; definitely edible.

  • I didn't mean anything negative by asking if it was edible. just trying to understand why my kids wouldn't like it. Obviously I know it's actually edible.

  • It's the change in tastes that your LOs are objecting to.  DD even gave me that disgusted face with water, but eventually I wore her down.  In my opinion, BM is less offensive, but I wouldn't choose either to drink with my dinner.
