daycare toddler moms - nap Q

Is your LO's nap schedule different at home vs. @ daycare?

DD's been on a pretty regular 1-3 nap schedule @ daycare for several months.  At home on the weekends though, she's ready to go down for a nap several hours earlier - some days as early as 10 am.  but, its stil about 2 hours and her bedtime doesn't vary as a result either.

I'm not sure whether this is just because home is less stimulating for her or she's just tired.  Should I keep her up on the weekends and try to keep her on the same schedule?

Re: daycare toddler moms - nap Q

  • When my DD was that age, she seemed to still like to take a morning nap on days she was at home even though at daycare they only did afternoon naps. As a result, she wouldn't always take an afternoon nap and it could make for some extra crankiness at the end of the day. I just let her nap in the mornings and eventually she wasn't interested in taking them anymore. Now she pretty much sticks to the daycare nap schedule, though it can take her awhile to go down when she it at home (she wants to come out of her room and play with us).

It can vary a little at home like she goes down a little earlier or later but generally the same time.  DS on the other hand is younger so his varies more.

  • He goes down around the same time, but he sleeps much longer at home (about 3-4 hours vs. 1 hour at daycare).

I have noticed she seems to tire earlier at home-- usually about an hour early.  She also naps for much longer at home too (usually 2+ hrs, while daycare is ~1 hr).  I think she's just tired, so we go with it.  Keeping her up makes it really difficult to put her down later, I'm finding out..!
  • Same here.

She sleeps at 1PM every day at school. At home, she's ready to pass out at 11. I do my best to keep her up, but she really gets fussy. I imagine it's peer pressure that keeps her up at school.

  • DD dropped her nap at home at 2 years old, yet she still naps for up to 2 hours a day at daycare (sometimes, like yesterday, it's just her "quiet time" and she didn't sleep at all).

I wouldn't worry about it. They have different routines and stimulation levels at daycare than at home.

  • DS is the same.  He goes down for his nap at least an hour earlier at home than at daycare, and he probably sleeps 30-60 minutes longer at home than at daycare.  However, bedtime doesn't change, and neither does the time he wakes up.

  • We just keep it about the same as daycare. Just until a few months ago, she was still wanting to do a morning nap plus afternoon, so on the weekends, we let her. But, she seemed to be fine adjusting at daycare to the one nap, they usually go down about noon. So funny too, because my on again off again napper who is in preschool, refuses to nap at home, but will nap at preschool 2 times per week, and their naps start at noon as well.
  • DD is like a perfect little clock at daycare during the week but at home on the weekends, it's anyone's guess as to what she'll do.  Her naps are all over the map on the weekends.  I've tried to keep her to the daycare schedule but she really, really resists it at home.  I think something about seeing all the other kids go nap too must make a difference.  At home I think she feels like she's missing something if she naps.
  • Yes, it's very different. They do 1 nap at daycare starting at 12 but on weekends, she sometimes still takes a morning nap around 9/10. I figure she is overtired from the week and needs the extra sleep so I let her catch up.

  • DS has always napped different at home vs. daycare.  They have a schedule there now and he doesn't nap till about 12:45 but @ home he usually naps about 3 hours after waking up.  Over the last month he has dropped the 2nd nap so his schedule is starting to be a little more like daycares plus with him not wanting the afternoon nap I try to keep him awake longer or we have a miserable evening b/c he is tired.  Whatever works for you.
