Re: when did/will you have LO try peanut butter?

  • Our ped. gave us the go ahead when she turned 1.  She ate it for about 8 weeks with no problems then broke out in hives.  We haven't given it to her since.  We're actually taking her in for allergy testing in July.

  • Our pedi said after 1, pretty much everything was ok, except for, in his opinion, raw honey.  He has had PB with no problems.

  • Our pedi said age two, our asthma specialist said age three. We tried it last week, DS hated it.

  • Our pedi gave the go ahead at one.  We have no histories of allergies to peanuts or anything else on either side.  DD doesn't have any major health issues.

She showed no interest at first but in the past month or so she's become a peanut butter maniac with no ill effects except that I really wish I could get her to eat stuff other than peanut butter wrapped in tortillas.

  • Lilah has been having pb since age one with no issues.  She loves fluffernutters as a special treat lunch!
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • DS had it when he turned one...just a little bit on a slice of bread....now he eats it all the time!

  • Ped said ok at age 1, but I waited until she was a little over 2. She had no problems with it and eats it all the time.

  • Do you have a history of food allergies in the family?

We gave DS peanut better at 13 months.

  • Both kids started around 20 months. DS ate it with no problems for about 6 months and then had reactions. We took him in and confirmed a peanut allergy. We now carry an epi pen for him and he's learning to ask if food contains peanuts.

If you're interested in an alternative, SunButter is really good (though expensive) and contains no peanuts or tree nuts.

  • We gave it at 12mo.

  • Our pedi said 2, but I have heard 3 from many other moms, so DD has not had it yet.  I'd like to hold off as long as possible.

  • pedi said it was fine at 1..i waited until he was 18mos
i used sunbutter until then and he liked it..but he LOVES peanut butter!
  • At first our pedi said 2 because we have a family history of an allergy.  When DS turned 2 I asked about how to introduce and she said that the new research says there is no link in delaying introducing peanut butter and the allergy.  We will introduce it DS2 when he is 1.

  • 11 months here.  DD loved it, no issues.  No allergies in the family either.
  • Our pedi gave us the go ahead to try peanut butter at DD's 2-year check.  I'm a little apprehensive since her older brother has a peanut allergy.
  • Our pedi says 3 but my DD had it for the first time last summer.  My DH and I have no history of peanut (or any other for that matter) allergies in our families.  I was eating a Nutter Butter and she begged for a taste.  My DH is a paramedic so we were just kind of ready to move if need be and let her have a bite.  She's been fine.

I personally don't believe the thought that if you introduce it too early you could actually cause the allergy or make it worse.

  • The latest studies are showing that delaying the introduction of peanut butter could actually be contributing to the rise in allergies. We introduced it before a year. The only thing we held off on was honey.

  • DS had it around 1, with no problems. Neither mine or DHs family suffers any allergies, and DS is a healthy boy. We'll probably do the same for DD.

I don't get this.  The latest studies are showing that the longer you hold off, the more likely the substance is to set off alarm bells in the body and cause a reaction.

My pedi said we should just bring cats into the delivery room and give each newborn a lick of peanut butter and get it over with.

  • I believe DD was somewhere around 18 months.  She happened to have helped herself to some peanut M&Ms and then got her second dose another unplanned way.  At that point Dr said no fear go ahead.

To me, 4 seems way too late.  Some people say you end up with an allergy from underexposure and 4 years seems way too far out there.  That is unless there is a known issue in family history.

Ditto for DD!  She will now specifically ask for a PB spoon.  I blame DH for that one.

  • DD tried it at a year, and wasn't a fan until a couple of months ago.
  • When DS was 1. I can't imagine why waiting until 4 is necessary.
