Testing early - silly newbie question

So when you're buying tests and am bombarded by all the promises that you can test 5 days early, etc. how early is that? Seriously, is that 5 days before you believe your period to be due?

In my experience, FF has not always hit the O date right on, so I'm wondering when I should test or if by Monday (11 DPO) but 5 days before AF should come, I would be okay? I just don't want a lot of BFN disappointment...

    Check out the peas in some of the more popular/older/regular posters siggy. I believe, it has a section on HPT results and early testing.

    I think FRER claims that in their studies, 100% of pregnant testers got a positive result by (I forgot) 10 or 11 dpo.  But that does not seem to hold true for everyone in real life.  If you can't handle seeing BFNs, I'd wait until 13 or 14dpo.
