Cervix "soft" - what does this mean?

Apparently I'm not up on my pregnancy lingo!

  • It's the same as "effacement". Your cervix softens in the weeks prior to delivery - It goes by %.... so, when you're 100% effaced your cervix is I guess the 'softest' it will get and ready for delivery (along with being dilated).

This is just what I understand of it :) I'm a nurse, but not a labor and delivery nurse. My doctor told me just the other day that my cervix was 'soft'. After I left the office I was thinking 'oh, that's effacement, I should've asked her what %'....

  • Thanks! I guess I should've asked for a %, too. Oh well, I will ask next week. :)

I think some doctor's call it ripening too. It just means that your cervix is getting ready for effacement and dilation. It has to soften before it changes shape (shortens and widens).
