Sewing your own cloth diapers

Has anyone tried sewing cloth diapers?  I just bought a kwik sew pattern the other day and ordered hemp fleece and PUL to get me started.  I sew a lot, so I'm sure I will be fine as far as assembling them.  I was thinking about making the fitted diapers and diaper covers, that way I could always try prefolds too.

If you have sewn your own diapers, did you find a specific pattern that worked very well for you?  Was it worth your time in the end after purchasing all the materials?  I'd love to hear some feedback before I get started! :)

  • A lot of ladies on here have sewn their own :)

I like Little Comet Tails pattern.  I've heard really good things about Very Baby pattern.

I think it is definitely worth my time and money.  It ends up being really cheap for each diaper and I can make them more "custom" (ie:  whatever fabrics I want and whatever prints I want)  :)

  • My mama made me some fitteds and covers. She used a Very Baby pattern. I lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvve them. We made a miscalculation and I can't use the covers she made with the fitteds she made since they aren't quite big enough. I use a Thirsties cover with the fitteds she made and Thirsties Fab Fitteds with the covers she made. Does that make sense?

It was totally worth her time. Once she got the first couple done it went pretty fast. You just inspired me to make a blog post about the diapers she made. There are pictures and more info on there. Link in my siggy.

  • Thanks sooo much! :)  I really appreciate hearing some feedback from others about this.  I am going to order the Very Baby pattern tomorrow for sure.  I can't wait to get some of these made up.  I like how it has the folded elastic around the entire diaper too.  Seems like they would be extremely easy to make.

When you say that the fitted diapers won't fit under the covers, what caused that?  Did you alter the pattern in any way, or did you follow the pattern exactly?  I'd like to avoid making the same mistake.  Thanks!

  • I've been sewing diapers for over a year now, and I'm totally hooked. It's super fun, and so much cheaper, as long as you don't let yourself be lured by all the beautiful fabrics out there! haha. My two favorite patterns are the Julibeans OS and Darling Diapers Unlimited. I've found the cloth diapering groups on yahoo groups to be amazing sources of information (and fabric!). There are a few diaper sewing groups on there. For fabric, I like Rockettbumz, This End Up and Nature's Fabrics. GL!
  • It was my fault that the fitteds don't fit under the covers. Instead of using a pattern specifically for fitteds and a pattern specifically for covers we just used the same cover pattern for both. We made the fitteds in the newborn size and the covers in the small size. We didn't alter the pattern at all for the fitteds. The fitteds are a little too wide in the crotch and a smidge too tall. When my mom makes more she's just going to trim the width in the crotch and take an inch off the rise. Then they should fit perfectly under the covers.

If I were in your shoes I would probably purchase the very baby cover pattern and a separate fitted pattern. That would avoid the problem all together without the trial and error my mom and I have had.
