BF class necessary?

BF's is it necessary to go to a BF class? I have watched videos online and read the books. Do you think it is worth while or do the nurses show you how it works with the baby after you deliver? Does it make more sense to just have a meeting with a lacation consulant after the baby is born?

Thank YOU!

Re: BF class necessary?

  • I really liked the bf class we took. I thought it was very informative. I would definitely recommend it. And have DH go with you. You'll need his help and support and taking the class will help him to know how to support you. BF'ing can be trying in the beginning so it's important to have support and encouragement.

  • PLEASE...PLEASE prepare yourself as much as possible. Truthfully, the childbirth class was less useful than the breastfeeding class. During L&D you have docs and nurses guiding you the whole time. Once you leave the hospital you have to be ready to take the initative to seek out help with bf'ing. I had a VERY difficult time bf'ing DD#1!  My DH attended the breastfeeding class with me and was an enormous help when I was to hormonal/emotional to remember what I was taught. PLEASE go to a class.
  • Personally, I would have rather paid to have a one-on-one session with the LC once the baby was born than have attended the class. The class didn't prepare me for the difficulties I faced.
  • Take it! You never know what you will need to know.
  • i didnt go to one. i read two books, watched a video my doula had and had a lc come to my room after lo was born. i was very informed. i dont think its necessary. gl
  • I thought it was very informative. Either way, see an LC when you're in the hospital, even if breastfeeding seems to be going well.

  • I will advise any of my friends to not bother.  As a previous poster said, I would have rather spent the money having a session with a lactation consultant AFTER the birth.  Maybe my class just sucked, all they told you about was how easy BFing is and what a great bond it is.  It is a great bond, and it's easy... NOW, but when you first start out it hurts and is so not easy.  I felt like I was blindsided.  And then also had to pay for an LC later, and that was so so so much more helpful, because every baby is different when it comes to nursing and a class can't really tell you every single situation that might arise.
  • I recommend it. My LO was born at a very pro-BFing hospital in the middle of the night. They handed her to me to try BFing on my own almost immediately but the help wasn't available during that time of day if I had needed it (4am). We did see an LC later in the day though.

BFing can have many obsticles and I think it's helpful to learn as much as possible ahead of time.
