First Dr. visit

edited July 2021 in Ohio Babies

Hello,

I have my first doctor's visit scheduled for next Friday and was wondering what I could expect out of this appointment.  Is it an appointment my husband should come to as well? This just seemed to happen pretty fast and I feel very under-prepared!

Re: First Dr. visit

  • I'm glad you asked this question, because I have my first appointment next Monday!  I will be 10 weeks starting tomorrow.  I called the doc's office last week, and they said that I will meet with a nurse to go over my medical history and run a bunch of tests (for STDs, other stuff that might be harmful to the baby), meet with the doctor where she'll do some thorough exams of your womanly regions (haha), and then following up with some "lab work", which I think is bloodwork and whatnot.  The nurse I spoke with said she isn't sure if my doctor in particular will choose to do an ultrasound or not, and I found that to be interesting.  My husband is a sweetie and wants to be really involved in this whole process - I originally thought that if the doc isn't going to do an ultrasound, he might find it boring to come with me...but he wants to be there regardless!  I think that if you and your husband would feel better if he joins you on the appointment, he should tag along.  :-)

  • When we went to our first appt it was nice to have DH there. We were lucky enough to have a dating US just to be sure of the EDD and our dr tried for the hb as well. Even if it is a "boring" appt, it's nice to have DH there for an extra set of ears. I know I was soooo excited that I missed some of the things dr said and vice versa. If your DH is willing to go regardless, he should go. GL & have fun!!

  • I  think that is up to you.  Some people have dh go with them the first time.  Usually they do a PAP test and I forget what else.  My first was awhile ago. ;)Some offices automatically do ultrasounds on the first visit to get a date and some do them only at 20 weeks unless there are medical issues.  My midwife usually only does them at the 20 weeks for gender and stuff.

I know people who had their dh go to every appt. but honestly most of the early appointments are kind of boring.  Hearing the heartbeat is the cool part and the rest of the time it is really uneventful- at least for me it is uneventful.

So I think whatever you want to do is fine!

  • Thanks for the advice! This is all very exciting, but very overwhelming.  I'm hoping to feel a little more confident after my appt. :)
  • At my first visit (7wks) I just had a pap and bloodwork. The dating u/s wasn't until 10wks, so DH came to that.
