for a wedding shower gift? Do you buy off of the registry or not?
I have to pick up a gift, and the stores that this couple registered at are pretty expensive. I was planning to get their wedding gift there, but probably not the shower gift. WDYT?
How about a gift card for the bridal shower? If not, I think getting a gift from somewhere else is fine. Maybe attach a gift receipt in case they get the same thing from different store.

Love & luck to my 3TC girls. Congrats to Omega-The boys are here!
If there's one thing I've learned while waiting my turn,
it's that in each life some rain falls but you also get some sun.
After 2 years & 2 losses, our little man arrived 8-2011.
I usually get just one gift and either give it at the shower or the wedding.
And I buy off the registry and here's why: When I got married, I got a TON of stuff from family that wasn't on the registry. I was glad they got me something, but this is the family that BEGGED me to register in the first place (I wasn't going to register at first for fear of seeming like I was asking for gifts). So, it was quite annoying having gone through all the planning to pick out my colors and have a lot of mismatched stuff (that I really didn't want anyway).
So, if I don't buy from the registry, I get a gift card to a store they are registered at. I took all my gift cards after I got married and bought stuff off the registry with them.

I usually buy from the registry but my friends are the types who register at Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond so it is easy to find presents.
You could always get them a gift card instead.
Exactly! I've never been faced with this before...I was thinking about going the gift card route.
When I registered, I did so at three different stores, cheap (Target), middle of the road, and high-end to help appeal to all of our guests. I guess some people don't think about that...
If they register for cheaper items, I do it off the registry. Are they registered at Crate & Barrell?
I like to do themes like a bottle of wine or champagne and two of their wine/champagne classes or the last time they had a pizza cutter and pizza baking board so I did that with some pizza dough mix.

Lots of love and luck to my PAIF/3T/IF Veteran ladies, especially my dear friend Zookie. Congrats to Papps, Teach84 and Starbuck on their little ones.
I always pick off the registry. Why guess on what they want when they have already taken the guessing out of it for you already?
Well...I registered for some things I thought I wanted...and I didn't necessarily need/want them after we got married. I think it's a double-edged sword either way. LOL
One gift that I got at my shower that I hadn't registered for was the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook, Wedding Edition (or something like that-it came from BB&B). I love that book and it had a nice inscription in it wishing MH and I well.

This exactly. We got so much stuff that we didn't want/need but I can't get rid of it- I would feel too guilty! So instead it sits in our basement. We usually get something off the registry for the shower and then do money for the actual wedding gift.

I normally buy off the registry. Unless I know the person really, really well and have something specific in mind for them that I know they would like/appreciate. I would also be sure to include a gift receipt in case they don't like it, it isn't to their taste or doesn't go with their decor.
If you are looking for ideas though I think a wine tote is a nice gift. There are many different styles - ones just to carry a bottle in, kinds to use for a picnic that come with glasses and a cheese cutting board. You can find something for just about any budget. You could also put an inexpensive bottle inside - depending again on your price point. There are lots of good wines for $12-15. Unless of course they don't drink wine at all - then not so much of a good gift - lol.

I know...I normally buy off of the registry as well to make things easier. However, my friends usually register at a range of stores to make that easier. I just don't usually spend as much on the shower gift as I do the wedding gift.
I almost always buy off of the registry. If there aren't a good assortment of price points, I'd buy them a gift card at a price you're comfortable with at one of the places they registered.
Trying to grow our family with both fertility treatments and adoption since March 2009
I stick to the registry for the shower. I know when DH and I were doing ours, there were a lot of things we really needed and I was grateful to have been given a lot of it. I always do money for the wedding itself.
I always go off the registry. If there is something smaller, you could put a GC or something related with it. For example, get her a kitchen gadget and a grocery GC or a pasta bowl with all the makings of a pasta dinner (or an Italien restaurant GC).

registry. I like to get stuff that I like but from their registry. If I can't find anything or stuff is too expensive I'll just get a gift card where they registered. Get a gift card to bed, bath, and beyond, or wherever they registered
I always get something off the registry. If you get something not on the registry I would get something like a cookbook that was mentioned earlier. I got a few cookbooks for one of my showers and LOVE them.
Personally, I usually buy off the registry for the shower, and give cash at the wedding.
For my wedding shower, one of my girlfriends, who I knew didn't have much money at the time, bought 3 very nice stacking boxes (Michaels or something?) then put tissue paper and one gift card from each of the 3 stores where I registered in each box, with the smallest box holding the smallest denomination ($10, I think) the middle box holding $15, and the last with a $25 card. The boxes were all tied together with beautiful ribbon and silk flowers. Honestly, I loved the gift and it was one of my fav's - one of the few I still remember! Just an idea!

Wedding gift is almost always china or crystal off the registry- how much of it depends on how much we're willing to spend. It might just be a teacup and saucer if they've registered for outrageously expensive stuff- and some of DH's extended family has.. or it might be a bunch of stuff if they're a close friend and have cheap china. DH got so irritated at not finishing our set that it's always his first choice.
Shower gift we either buy off the registry (I usually get to pick and tend to go with random kitchen stuff) or, if the registry is filled with stuff that's too expensive I'll go look up their china/crystal patterns and find something that compliments the pattern. A nice wine stopper once, a trivet that complimented their pattern, salt and pepper shakers.
Also kinda depends on if I've been in their house before or know if they were living together or well established before the wedding. Younger people just moving in together might get an assortment of high quality kitchen basics. More established couples might get a nice cookbook or as a last resort a gift card.
