Parenting after a Loss

When do/did you introduce juice or water?

I've been reading online and most places are saying you can introduce your infant to juice at 6mos in a sippy cup. Wow, has my little girl already reached that point?! Anyways, my dr has not said anything about it (other than prune juice for consitpation) so I was wondering if you have started giving your lo juice or water- when did you do it, or if you haven't when do you plan on it? And did you use a sippy cup or a bottle? TIA!

Re: When do/did you introduce juice or water?

  • My pedi said no juice or water during the first year. It was the same for DS1 (with a different pedi). I don't know if the rules have changed but I am going to wait unless bambino steals my drink from me which he constantly tries to do.

  • My pedi told us to give him no more than 4oz of water a day...the extra fluid helps once they're eating more food so they don't get constipated.  They said we could do juice, but they don't encourage it too much.
  • We've given DS water when he's eating table food, but I've read and heard that there's no reason to introduce juice before 1 yo because it doesn't have much (if any) nutritional value.

  • I am not a big fan of juice so that will be given only on rare occasions or when we make some naturally at home. But we started water around 6 months. Most pedis say a few oz once you start solids to help prevent constipation. Plus it's so hot here that I think he gets extra thirsty. He loves water and screams for joy when I refill my glass (he takes sips from my cup, drinks from a sippy, or we sometimes put water in his bottle).

  • like pps, we are not doing juice.  DH and I don't drink it so I am not planning on giving DD juice.  We have been trying to give her water, honestly, before 6 months.  That is because my DD won't take a bottle though.   So we have had a sippy full of water with her toys to try to get her to drink out of something, anything, so I can be away from her and she will eat.  No real luck yet.  But with this heat, we have given DD water a number of times, also with food.

  • Juice - not yet. Maybe never - or at least rarely. Water - at 5 months in a sippy with solids.

  • DD has been drinking water since she started solids at 5 months.  There was a brief period of time where she would not take it unless we dropped some apple juice in, so we did that.  We did like 1 part apple juice to 16 parts water.  Now she will drink water alone, so no more apple juice.  I love 100% juice and drink it often, but heavily diluted (like 1 part juice to 4 parts water).  So I imagine I'll give my child real juice in similar proportions when she is older.  I would much rather she drink juice than soda, and water does get boring after awhile.
