Carpel Tunnel - ouchie!

So what I thought was just "normal" swelling with some pain in my hands, the Dr. is saying is pregnancy induced carpel tunnel.  Good times.  Basically, the only thing he said I could do was to wear the brace, which I have been doing, but it's still hurting quite a bit.  Any of you ladies had/have the same thing and have any luck with any other home remedies, etc.?  My mom said to try putting my hand in ice water, I have tried that.  Doesn't really help.  Thanks!

  • I have this and I'm a hairstylist so I'm constantly in pain, it sucks!  I wear the braces at night when I go to bed and sleep with them on.  That seems to help a little but I still have problems with it all day at work.

  • I've had it since 18 weeks and in the last month it's gotten reeeaaalllly painful.  I wake up in the night feeling like my fingers are being hit with a hammer.  The braces don't work for me so I don't wear them anymore.  The ice water thing does work a little bit though.  I'm not sure how you did it but I fill a deep bowl with cold water and some (not too much) ice and just soak my hands for about 10-15 minutes.  I do it during the day when I'm home but mostly at night before bed.  It's not a permanant solution but does make the intense pain go away for a bit.  Also, I've started taking cold baths, which helps with both ankle/feet swelling but also the carpel tunnel.

  • Mine has gone the opposite way- its been numb for the past month or so due to my carpal tunnel. No help here- its just been getting worse. I will not miss this pregnancy symptom! I keep dropping everything.

    Good luck

  • I'm in the same boat sister! My doctor also recommended wearing a brace, although mine is not that painful yet. I feel it mostly in the morning when I wake up.

  • Im totally with you-wearing a brace right now. It is so severe that my right hand (which Im right handed) is pretty much useless without the brace on. Its completely numb and my wrist hurts like crazy...but I suppose the worst part is that I now have it in my left hand as well. Not as bad, the numbness comes and goes...but how am I supposed to work with a brace on both hands?? I just hope after Lo arrives it will go away... Did I mention my hands are swollen as well? I thought I had Pre-e but luckily I dont. My body is just breaking down on me I suppose. GL and I hope your brace helps!!!
  • I have it too & its so annoying.  I sleep in the braces & only wear them during the day if I have to.

No other remedies other then keeping them in the brace for support.  sorry!

A picture is worth a thousand words. I'd bet money your words are ignorant.
  • Yes, this is not fun. I've been wearing braces for over a month now.  I keep hoping it will just magically go away - but it hasn't! I want to be able to pick up LO when he arrives without wincing in pain! Not fair! Oh- and a family friend told me she had it for FOUR months after delivering... something to look forward to............
  • YES! and it is horrible! My doctor gave me a brace and a topical anti-inflammatory (I can't remember the name) that is safe to use in pregnancy b/c I was in tears. Only problem is insurance does not usually cover the topical anti-inflammatory, but it was worth it.

Heat also worked better for me than ice. GL!

  • I just started having this same issue last week - my Dr said the same exact thing - wear a brace at night. So far its been a bit better - I just keep thinking not much longer. ;)
