Tylenol - too much?

DD is teething...has been for the past week and the teeth are still not through the gums. She's cranky...I'm cranky. Every night for the past 6 nights, I've given her Tylenol before bed. I'm starting to feel a little guilty about it...like I'm overmedicating her or something. But, I tried to hold off on it last night and she kept crying. Do you think I should continue to give her the Tylenol before bed until these puppies break through? Will that make me a bad mom for drugging my child?!

  • I've done it and don't consider myself a bad mom. If the baby is clearly in pain and you've done everything else you can then that's the best thing you can do for them in my opinion.

  • no you are not a bad mom.  you have to give it every 4-6 hours everyday for like a month for it to cause harm.  i have been giving ds motrin everynight for the past week b/c his eye teeth are breaking through and it sucks.  i know he is in pain.  if they are in pain and tylenol/motrin will help - do it, that is what it is there for.  you are not overmedicating your baby Smile
  • We're going through the same exact thing.  Before this started, I had never given her any medicine and now I'm giving it to her every night and I hate it.  Every couple of nights I hold back and end up giving it to her later anyway.

I don't really see an alternative.  She is in pain and it's the only thing that helps.  My doctor suggested switching off between Tylenol and Motrin just so that she doesn't get too much of one kind.  We're going to start doing that tonight.

  • Have you tried any teething drops or tablets?  I got some teething tablets from Walgreens and they really seem to help.  You dissolve them in some water and then rub them directly on the gums.  They are all natural.
  • Not a bad mom.  However, I would ask Dr. about Motrin.  It works quicker and longer.  Your DC has to be 6 months though...I didn't look before I started typing.
  • I would probably call the doctor 6nights is long time to be teething my doc said it will come and go.  Maybe something else is going on?  GL
  • I've been giving ds tylenol every night for the past 3 nights and he's getting it again tonight because his other front tooth is coming though and he has a little fever. I don't think you are a bad mom, but if you are concerned you should ask your pedi.
