Parenting after a Loss

two "when did" questions...

when did you start putting your LO to bed awake? maybe i already should be doing this? he usually falls asleep when nursing, but i don't want him to get in the habit of needing the boob before he will go to sleep at night!

also, if your LO sucks their thumb, when did they start? i think DS wants to, he tries so hard and ends up just sucking on his fist kind of, like he can't get his thumb in there.  he really doesn't like pacifiers, so he sometimes just uses me as a human pacifier; i think sucking his thumb might be good for him when he is just wanting to comfort suck?

Re: two "when did" questions...

  • I am going to be of virtually no help here as DS still falls asleep nursing and we transfer him to his crib.  I am actually going to start putting him to sleep without nursing starting at 10 months, in preparation for weaning him from BF.  I've only recently started putting him down for naps without nursing beforehand and although he fusses a bit he does end up falling asleep.  He has sucked his thumb since he was just a few weeks old and I think it does alleviate a lot of the "human pacifier" issue.  I totally agree that it would be just what he needed if he was looking to comfort suck.  GL!

  • 1 - Just recently (about 3 weeks ago), I wish I had started earlier, maybe around 4 months.  It didn't become an issue until about a month or so ago.

2 - She sucks on her thumb once in awhile, got the hang of it around 3 months old, but didn't really take to it (thankfully)

  • I started putting DD down drowsy, but awake around 3 months of age.  She started fighting sleep at that point, so I thought it was important to get more of a routine down.

DD takes a pacifier, so I'm not sure about thumb sucking.

  • It depends on how sleepy DD is when we go to put her down.  Sometimes she will fall asleep nursing and we will transfer to the crib.  But other times, she's still wide awake after eating and we put her in the crib and let her put herself to sleep.  I'm kind of glad it happens this way as it gives her the best of both worlds.

DD hasn't found her thumb yet, but she sucks her middle and ring fingers together A LOT.  She will take the pacifier, but she can't keep it in her mouth yet, so when it falls out, she replaces with her fingers.  If she sucks on her fingers when she's awake I know that means that she's really tired.  Sometimes if she's fighting sleep, I can put her in the crib and stand over the crib holding the pacifier in her mouth and that will put her to sleep.  As soon as I can let go of the pacifier, it falls out, and she doesn't wake up, I know it's safe to leave the room :)

  • I have always had a relatively good sleeper, so we started around 2.5 months. Before that we would put him to sleep in the Boppy and then carry him in after he was asleep. Then we started putting him in the crib when he was very sleepy and staying with him until he fell asleep. Now I can put him in there pretty much wide awake and he'll fall asleep, but we started the process when he was your LO's age. It took some time though!
