Parenting after a Loss

Playing with bottle/nipple and not eating

LO keeps chewing on the nipples of her bottles and not eating. This happens once she gets about halfway through her bottle. It is taking close to three times longer to feed her now because she just plays. She eventually finishes the bottle minus one ounce every once in a while. When I BF she does the same thing except she mostly tries to look around. This happens even when we are in a quiet spot with the exception of the middle of the night feeding where I can barely keep her awake. I thought she would be older when this started. Should I be doing anything special to try to stop this behavior?

  • Nothing you can do, M was the same way at your LO's age. In fact it hasn't gotten much better unless he's really hungry! My LC told me that they just get easily distracted by the world around them and are curious about everything. Just keep doing what you are doing!

  • Seems to be a phase. DD did that around your LO's age, then went back to being OK, and is now going through it again. I got so bad at one point she was hardly eating and we were struggling the whole time. We went to a faster flow nipple, but I don't BF anymore, that has helped a little. But instead of her drinking her bottle in 10 minutes, it was taking 30.
  • I was reading about the 4 month wakeful the other day and it listed things like that as they eat! Let me see if I can find the link!

here it is: they mention something along those lines:

  • I have the same issue w/ Alyssa! And if her constantly pulling off my nipple wasn't bad enough- the teeth haven't made it any better! She is always pulling off and looking around when I nurse, unless she is super hungry or tired. She does the same thing with her pumped bottles too. I've given up and take it away when she starts to play with it- she usually ends up finishing it about 30min later. Good thing I'm a SAHM, bc otherwise I'd never have the time for it I swear!
