i never used a bottle warmer. didnt find a need for one. all i did to heat frozen breastmilk or just cold breastmilk. was put it in hot water for about 5 minutes and it warmed it up really nice.
You shouldn't microwave any milk/formula. It heats it up unevenly and there could be heat pockets in it that you wouldn't know of by testing it on yourself first. We had an Avent warmer, and I would not recommend it. It has different settings on it based on the ounces of milk, and it never seemed to warm up consistently. We had to kinda work with it for each bottle.
I had one from my sister. I used it for middle of the night feedings (DD never latched, so I pumped and stored), for a little while. It was faster than the cup of hot water with the Dr. Browns bottles. But once we switched to playtex drop-in bottles, I used the hot water all the time, as those could not go in the warmer.
Bottle warmers only work well for certain bottles. We had to put DD's bottle in the warmer 3 times plus to get it warm since they are the Mam bottles and are very thick plastic. Also the boiling water sometimes would make them leak because they had a vent air system in the bottom. We ended up just microwaving them for like 10 seconds before we put in the formula, which isn't recommended but there wasn't any other good way. She did just fine with that. I think they are a waste of money personally. You can also heat a bottle in a pan on the stove and some of the ladies in 6-12 used to keep a crock pot with warm water on all day and just set the bottles in there to warm.

Depends on if you are going to BF or formula feed. If you know you will formula feed, they are worth it. If you plan on BF, you can live without one if everything goes as planned. I planned on BF and it didn't work out and I had to go with formula and pumping. A warmer came in handy. If you want to BF, you can wait til after baby comes to decide if you want one.
I used to work at a daycare with a good solution to this! They used crock pots with a few inches of water in them and just left them on all day - you always had a bottle warmer and it's probably something you have in your kitchen already (and probably never use as it is!) You just have to remember to unplug if you leave the house and to add water every once in awhile. It would work best for mommies who get to stay at home...

I wouldn't microwave anything, but that's just me
And yes, warm water works to heat up the bottle.
I had one and returned it!
I found it easier and faster to warm BM in a coffee cup with water surrounding it. And when we went to formula I just used warm water from the tap!
