My mom and I went crib shopping today. I never knew there were so many styles and types of cribs. Any suggestions as to which is best? I have two favorites but want some opinions.
We have the Munire Urban for Lyla. I love the look of it, and the crib itself is really sturdy and well-made, but the rest of the furniture set isn't as great, IMO. If we had to go back and do it again, I'd probably go with a cheaper set.
I don't know if there is really such thing as "the best", the only two things I wanted when we were looking for dd's crib was that I didn't want drop down and it had to be modern looking. I think really it's what style you like best.
I'm not sure about the best, but I know DH and I will be getting a convertible crib. One that eventually turns into a toddler bed, then a full size head rail and foot rail. I'll make sure we get teething covers so it lasts!

Pick up a copy of Baby Bargains if you haven't already - the authors rate every crib manufacturer by materials used, # of recent recalls, price point, style, etc. I was really surprised to learn that the crib we thought we were getting was made by a company that's had 3 major recalls in the last 2 years (and was given a grade of F by the book!) - which makes it a no-go for us. Now we just need to go back out shopping to see what we can find in our price range by companies with better ratings.

We got DS the Babi Italia set in Pineherst. We love everthing about it. I think We will go with the same brand for this next baby but in a dif color. You can get it at BRU.
We got the Bella Crib from JCP. I recommend testing the crib in the store...is it sturdy? Do the slats look like they can be easily broken? Does it have a chew rail? If you get a drop side, is it easy to use and study. Does it look easy to put together properly (which is where most crib problems come from).
I even had DH jump into the crib that we bought to make sure it was honestly sturdy...even got him to jump into it after we put it together at home and we checked every angle and board.
We have a drop side that my ds is currently using. I can't imagine being able to reach over a stationary. I am only 5'2". I know that recently there has been some concern over them, but I keep an eye on ours to make sure it isn't damaged and check recalls, ours hasn't been. I think it is a matter of preference.
just be very vigilant of the recalls. Many, many drop-side cribs have been recalled. I am short too (5'3") but plenty of short people manage just fine. I can't imagine going drop-side - I'd be so paranoid.
You can google to find out more if you're interested. Here's a link. The issue seems to be mostly broken/missing/incorrectly assembled parts.
Wait what's wrong with drop sides?? Obviously I haven't done any research, but that's what my younger sisters had when we were growing up.
Drop sides are being recalled like nobody's business, and there is talk of making it illegal for them to be manufactured or sold due to all the recalls. We got a fixed side crib for DD, and I'm glad we did.

Wow, definitely will be avoiding that. I have done zero research on this stuff and I'm a little afraid to get started, I just know it'll be hours of googling and reading reviews and I guess I'm procrastinating.
