Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Those who used CIO...help needed!

My little man will be 7 months in a few days and I am about to go crazy. He is the most well behaved baby until about midnight. He goes to bed around 8-9 and in the last 3 weeks or so, has been crying in his sleep. He is a tummy sleeper but rolls back and forth great but for some reason, in the middle of the night he rolls to his back and then starts crying. I go in and check on him and roll him back to his stomach and pat his butt for a few seconds and he goes right back to sleep. This happens about 4 times throughout the night. I know he's not hungry because Ive tried feeding him a few times thinking maybe he was just going through a growth spurt but he'd only finish ~2oz. Also, if I don't go in there and pat his butt for a few seconds, his quiet cry turns into an all out cry which makes him cough. Oh and also, he just started doing this during his naps as well. So...my questions for those who have used CIO methods...

-How did you rule out the crying as being anything else? (teething, tummy ache, etc.) *I always feel like I should console him because I am worried he is in pain or doesn't feel well but then he will stop crying when I pick him up.

-Did your LO whimper and you let them cry or was it an all out scream as I described?

-How many nights did it take?

-Did you start this at nap or during the night?

-Any useful tips or advice?

  • OHH I've been there and still can't say it's over but it's WAY better now.

I too felt SOOO quilty if me or my husband didn't go in! However this is the first habit you will have to try and break. But I know it's SO hard!

First time she cried for almost an hour (no judging please). But then the second night was MUCH better...maybe 15 minutes....probably only took about 4 nights...but then she got sick and it was like starting all over again!

So in total it took about a month to get her to only waking up once a night. We now have her sleeping 9hrs straight which is amazing for her!

I completely believe every baby is different though and go with your instinct! You also have to be ready too, or else it won't work!

I've given tylenol when I wasn't sure if she was teething or not....I didn't think it would hurt though..and it ended up helping!

    GL and hang in there!

Thanks! :) I think I will start on Wednesday (DH is off Thurs.) I know it is going to be so hard but I definitely know it is a habit that needs to be broken...especially today when he cried for like 10 minutes in his crib, only 30 mins into his nap, and I went in & picked him up and he stopped crying. That is the first time he stopped crying so quickly so it's obviously just a comfort thing. It will be so much better for our whole family once he starts sleeping though the night, especially him.

  • We did a CIO approach with night time.  First one arm unswaddled, then both arms, then still walked/nursed to sleep, then CIO.

We decided ahead of time on a 15 min limit to the crying.  If she was still crying (rarely whimpers..if she's upset it's crying) then we go in and do whatever feels right.  Usually she would be wet or something.  It really didn't take long at all and now she's just as easy to put down for naps.

Things have changed some since we started at 4 1/2 months with CIO.  Sometimes she isn't ready to bf and go down at night ;-) In those cases I put her down and let her cry for about 5-8 min then go in and give her another go at the boob. Invariably she seems to understand that she should go ahead and eat and she always does then goes down.  Often she will cry as I am laying her down and be done with by the time I've covered her up and am walking out of her room.
