Hitting and kicking me...

How do I stop Miles from doing this? I usually grab his hand or foot and give him a firm "No", followed by a "Use nice hands". And he laughs at me and does it again. He really is too young still to understand the concept of time out and redirecting doesn't seem to work either. What do I do? I'm tired of getting beat up by a toddler.

  • From my own experience with dd, you are doing what you should/can.  He'll grow out of it, and until then it's tough to stop it. It was terribly frustrating for me, since i was the only one she did this to.

  • I have no advice.  I, too, get beat up by a toddler everyday.  You should have seen him go at me yesterday.  Although I totally deserved it and couldn't stop laughing while I was on the floor shielding myself.  I guess I'm not doing a great job of discouraging him from doing it.  But if I make any kind of a big deal about it he laughs and does it again.

  • I would personally make sure he is in a safe place and just walk away. It sounds like he's trying to get your attention and the best thing you can do is not give it to him. Reward him when he tries to get your attention in a healthy way. My DS used to beat me up alot too, but then I started doing timeouts/leaving him alone for a few minutes and it seems to have subsided a bit. GL!
  • I did exactly what you do and it did stick. Give him sometime.

  • When my son would hit or kick, I would firmly say "NO" put him in his crib and leave for a minute.  Even though he didn't really understand what "time out" was, he understood that if I suddenly put him in his crib without hugs and kisses (like I did with naps or bedtime) that I was not happy.  He now knows that when he is in trouble, he has to sit on his bed until we come in.  We've been doing this since he was 14 months or so.

  • When DD does this (slap, I grab her hand & tell her NO, then she laughs & does it again) then I walk away from her (not giving her the reaction she is looking for) then it goes into a tantrum, but at least she stops doing it!
