When maternity clothes no longer fit... (long/vent/advice needed))

I'm getting really frustrated ladies, so I'm turning to you for help!

I've also had a long torso- even not pregnant, I couldn't wear short shirts as they'd show my belly, and I tended to buy long shirts so that I could reach above my head without flashing my belly button.

I have bought most of my maternity clothes at yard sales or consignment shops, and have been happy up to this point. I did have to go up a size in maternity clothes (which I know you're not supposed to, I know we're supposed to wear our pre-pregnancy size) from medium to large since all mediums were getting too short on me. But up till now the larges have fit pretty well.

My problem is that, along with my long torso, I'm carrying baby waaaaaaay out in front. I seriously look like one of those little girls who shoves a ball up her shirt to 'look like mom!'. It's a little ridiculously out of proportion. My belly being so far out pushes all maternity pants downwards. They're not falling off, but they do sit low on my hips.

And since my belly has been growing, and my shirts obviously haven't, I've run into a bit of a dilemma. Right now, with my arms lowered, my longest shirts overlap my pants by maaaaaybe an inch. The shorter shirts don't overlap at all, and I can only wear them around the house or with a longer shirt underneath.

What am I going to do? I have 2 months left! I went to a motherhood maternity store today, and even the XXL shirts were barely long enough for me- and looked awkwardly oversized through my shoulders and chest.

I have thought about going to goodwill and hitting up sales for lightweight sundresses (non-maternity) that I can wear over shorts as tops. But I have no further ideas. And it would be nice to have t-shirts and a long sleeve shirt just in case I want them.

Is anyone else rapidly getting to the point where they're showing a 'white trash belly'? I am starting to remind myself of an overweight white guy hanging out on his porch in a wife beater with his belly hanging out while he swigs his beer. (Don't worry, I'm swigging water, not beer).

Any advice about styles/brands/what to do would be appreciated.

  • Maybe you could try a belly band over your belly and top of your pants. It'll cover your belly when you lift your arms. I don't know how comfortable it would be though ...

  • My maternity shirts are way too short! I don't want to buy new ones either since the babies will be here in a week. I look ridiculous. My husband always laughs because they don't even cover my stomach. I found one tank top that does cover it and so I wear it under all my shirts.
  • I'm wearing a ton of dresses. I went to Old Navy and I can still fit into their regular sundresses, but you may have to get to one that has a maternity section and see what they have. Target also has some good dresses too.

Have you tried on any maternity tanks from ON or Gap? Worth a look if you haven't.

  • i have the same problem, but i am at 36 weeks.  I have a long midsection, which i miss dearly:), but even pre-pregnancy i had to buy long shirts.  Just the last few weeks, all my long flowy maternity and pre-maternity shirts almost cover the top of my pants just standing still. Any movement, and its a watermelon show.  Ive resorted to sundresses that are now a bit too short w/o pants, and i wear one pair of jeans that still fits under them.  You know how you see girls wearing "dresses" that are so tiny? They are now our shirts!  I feel you though, its irritating! (just like everything else these days) :)
  • That stinks!  :-(   Is it possible to wear a long, fitted tank under some of the longer shirts that you do have?  I've found a couple different style tanks at Target that seem fairfly long to me, although I don't think I'm carrying the same as you.  My little guy is out front, but he sits really high so I haven't had a problem with shirts.

    Good luck!

My husband giggles at me too... and I don't want new clothes either (I'm super cheap and feel like I JUST bought clothes) but there's no way I can wear what I've been wearing for two more months. I've got like 3 shirts that really cover me, the rest are short and I don't feel comfortable going out in public like that! I'd be embarrassed at church and I'd probably end up on the blog 'People of Walmart' while running errands.

I can't figure out if I just have a freakishly long torso that's longer than I had realized, or if I'm carrying baby freakishly far out in front. Or maybe both... ~sigh~

  • Some of my shirts are pretty short. DH laughs every time he can see my belly.

I would try the sundresses if not what about finding a tank top that is long enough and just wear it under like a PP mentioned.

  • You should find some of those extra long men's ribbed tanks. Then, you could layer some of the shirts you already have over them without having to worry about your belly showing.

I'm short but bought some "tall" length non-maternity ribbed tanks from Old Navy and they've worked nicely, especially this late in pregnancy. I think it would stink to be tall/lomg torso'ed and pregnant because a lot of maternity clothes are so danged short and boxy shaped.
  • Sadly, no tanks I have or have tried on are long enough anymore. I'm telling you I have a watermelon sticking out here!

I've tried ON, gap, target, and motherhood maternity tanks. They used to work but it's like in the last week baby hit a growth spurt and I feel like I get bigger by the day- and my doc says I should continue to grow like this the rest of pregnancy (due to sickness I didn't do so well at the growing/gaining weight thing earlier so am 'catching up' now I guess).

Maybe I'll go dress shopping tonight... I'm just feeling sulky about having to spend more money.

  • Target has these long and lean tanks that I've bought in XXL and they work well for length. (they were on sale last week!)  They look foolish on top, and I would NEVER wear them alone, but for under t-shirts or other tanks they cover the tops of my pockets on the pants that are being pushed down.

DH doesn't like to go clothes shopping with me anymore because last time I got angry and complained because there were maternity shirts that I felt like would be too short on my when I DON'T have a baby bump.

I'm sorry ladies, you're all being awesome and giving good advice. I'm just seriously feeling grumpy and self conscious about this, which isn't normally like me.

  • I have the same problem and have been wearing a bella band under my shirts.  I need coverage coming down from the top *and* up from the bottom nowadays.

HA Stick out tongue My "tall" ON tank tops now only hit my belly button!

  • I don't necessarily have a long torso but I do have that giant in front tummy which my shirts don't cover and pushes down my pants. For the past couple of weeks even my biggest maternity shirts are too short and my Belly Bands wont stay up on my stomach any more. They only thing I've been able to find that works is both Target and Motherhood make these very fitted spandex tank tops that are really long in length. I have to wear them under everything now to keep from having that strip of pasty white stretch marked skin from being exposed to the work! I like that I'll be able to wear them post preggers as well, makes me feel better about spending money on maternity stuff this late in the game!
  • I just got back from Goodwill, lol. I bought 6 sundresses for 20 bucks- and they're all cute and I think I will wear them post-pregnancy.

They're in the wash now, and I have a sewing machine in case one is long enough to cover my shorts completely (unlikely with this belly). I'll just hem- I'm not cutting away fabric I need later!

I did try the bella band- it just got pushed down too. And I bought the men's extra long ribbed tanks Sunday- sadly the darn things hit at my belly button, just like pp.

I think if I layer these sundresses over tanks (since these sundresses weren't meant for pregnancy boobs) I'll be able to make it through to the end.

Thanks for all the advice, and for letting me vent!
