Any mamas use gripe water for their LO's gas/colic/fussiness?

Can you recommend what you are using? Also, is 2 weeks too early to give newborns gripe water? I'll be asking the pediatrician at our appt. on Wednesday but just wanted to get you thoughts. TIA!

  • I think Lori (M2MW) liked Colic Calm as a more natural form of gripe water.  Not many include a list of ingredients but I am pretty sure she did some research to find one that was pretty natural?

We never had an issue but used probiotics pretty much from the start after I read an article about a possible relationship of good gut flora (or lack thereof) in colic-y babies.  (checked with our naturopathic doctor before hand).

Oh, I remember some of you talking about using probiotics. What kind do you use? I think that may be a better option for us...thanks!

  • we use Udo's Choice infant powder.

1/4 teaspoon/day in his first bottle (directions say 1/2 teaspoon).  Before he was bottle fed at all we used a nursing tube but I have read that you can mix it with a little breastmilk and finger feed.

Breastmilk is suppose to have some probiotics but my ND said it would not do any harm and probably lots of good to help out :)

I can say that when we got lazy about giving a bottle and didn't bother with tube feeding he did get noticeably gassy and had more sporadic and different looking poops (TMI, sorry).

**edit to include where to buy.  We buy it at Super Supplements (not sure if that is a nationwide chain). It's refrigerated.  70 servings for about $16 - since we use 1/2 the recommended dose it lasts way longer for us.

I think Whole Foods sells it too.

  • Baby's Bliss is also organic, you can start using at 2 wks.  My local CVSs carry it in the baby section.  We were much happier with the results from that than when we used Mylicon drops.
  • Also, Little Tummies makes a gripe water that we liked as well.
  • we never used it...our pedi told us that we could use it if we wanted but that there are no studies published to prove that it works...but she said it probably doesn't hurt to try it if you want to :) miss A was never too gassy so we didn't need to use it anyway
  • Every baby is different. Gripe water didn't do anything for us but Mylcon worked wonders! Our pedi said it's not absorbed by the body, it just breaks up the gas bubbles so he can pass them. My lactation consultant said the same thing.

I'm interested to learn more about pro-biotics though.
