Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Would you be would you have been comfortable..

Being an hour from the hospital?

The reason I ask is we are moving when I am 37 weeks, originally I was going to change Doctors, but with the development of Cholestasis H and I decided it would be in my and the baby's best interest to stay with the OB and Practice that know my pregnancy inside and out.  I also am more confident in the NICU at this hospital incase any complications Arise, it is the only Level III NICU in the area besides childrens in the city and Loyola.

I ask because I know that in second pregnancies people tend to go quicker when they go into labor, that being said would you get your butt in the car once contractions are consistent say 8 minutes or so, or try and wait it out till they are close together (5-1-1)?

Re: Would you be would you have been comfortable..

  • I was over an hour from my hospital while I was at work...I was terrified that I would go into labor at work and not make it to my hospital...I really didn't want to deliver at the one by my work.  Luckily everything turned out ok.  If that's really where you are the most comfortable I'd say do it, get going to the hospital as soon as contractions start.  Do you have any family in the area you could stay with closer to your due date?

What hospital do you want to deliver at?  Where are you moving to?  (I'm curious because I'm in the area)

  • We're deciding this as well b/c we normally go to my mom's on Christmas Eve and she lives an hour and 20 minutes from our hospital. I'm due on Christmas Eve...it's a tough call for me b/c I was induced with DD so I don't know what it really feels like to go into labor naturally. But I was also 2 weeks late, so I would hate to sit around on Christmas Eve and have NOTHING happen! :)

So I guess my question to you is, did you go into labor naturally and do you know what signs to expect? If so I might feel comfortable being an hour away. And what kind of contingency plans do you have for care for your 1st LO if you are an hour away? It certainly does make things dificult being an hour away from home when you already have another child. Do you have family in the area of the hospital?

  • We are moving to Grayslake and I want to deliver at Good Sam in Downers Grove, Despite the complications And trauma of my Daughter being born really sick with no indication of any problems the entire pregnancy we had a great experience there.  Plus we know the NICU and the Staff pretty well too.

  • Yes.  And I say that because I did it ;)

I live 15 minutes from the hospital, but I work an hour from it (could be more with a lot of traffic!).

With DD, I was a whopping 6cm dialated.  For 3 freaking weeks.  I ended up having to be induced at 39w1d, but I worked until the day before I delivered her.

I talked to my doc in depth about how far I had progressed on my own and how far I worked from the hospital.  She said it was completely fine, but told me that I shouldn't wait too long to come in (obviously) and that as soon as I had consistent contractions to leave work right away and head to the hospital.

I then asked her at what point I should head to a closer hospital in the city I worked (there was/is an AMAZING hospital right next to where I work in Philly) and she said that I should only go there if my water breaks while I'm in active labor.

    GL to you!

PS- Even though I was induced, my second labor/delivery was a lot easier and faster!

  • My parents Live about 15 minutes from where we are moving to, and H's parents are only about 30 minutes from the hospital, My Mom will be with me in Delivery so the contingency plan is to have H's parents meet us at the hospital to get DD.  DD will then Stay at the Inlaws till We go home and then my Mom and Dad are going to take her for a day or two so we can get settled at home.

I can totally understand this!  We drive DD from the Plainfield area downtown to Childrens for all her appointments related to her Turner's Syndrome b/c they're the best at it.  One of the teachers I work with delivered all 4 of her kids at Good Sam and can't say enough good things about it.

  • I did not go into labor on my own but I was having pretty consistent contractions before I was given Pitocin on the day I was induced, so I have an idea of what they feel like.  My Worst fear is to go into labor at work...but that would be my luck LOL

I was induced with both, so this was one of my fears as well! =)

The Staff is Phenonemenal as is the Hospital Facilities, plus they just Moved to a 1 to 1 ration of Nurses to Mom/Baby and added 3 more LC's.

I am really hoping we don't have to use the NICU this time, and I can enjoy rooming in and getting lots of Snuggle time with Little man before we go home.

  • It took us about an hour to get to the hospital b/c of rush hour traffic. It stressed me out but when I was actually in labour and heading to the hospital I knew we'd get there in time and I wasn't worried. I would probably stick with the hospital and make sure DH or a cab phone number were on hand! :)
  • We are an hour away from our hospital. My water broke so I guess the scenario is a little different. but I had plenty of time to shower, pack my bag and get to the hospital and I was still only 5cm when I checked in. Water broke at 1am got to the hospital around 4am had the baby at 3pm. I would say that if your doctor thought for some reason your labor would be super quick I would feel comfortable but I don't think second baby = quicker labor always. GL!
