When/How did you drop pacifier?

My DS is becoming paci obsessed even though we only give to him at naps and bedtime, and sometimes during a car ride...when did you drop it and HOW?!

Thanks

Re: When/How did you drop pacifier?

  • We tried to drop it right around the age of 2. Our pedi said it wasn't a big deal and not to force the issue, because DD only uses it for bed, naps, and long car rides as well. However, we decided to try and see what would happen. Well, she ended up sucking on her finger instead. She didn't even miss a beat.

So, after 2 months of sucking on her finger, and me having visions of a 6 year old sucking her fingers, I caved and gave the paci back. Thankfully, she quit sucking her finger, but I am obviously still left with the paci dilemma. I am honestly torn with what to do now, because I will be having DS soon, and I don't want to take away her comfort. Sad

Hopefully, you have better luck than we did.

  • I did not want to DS to have a pacifier when DD when was born. By about 13months old he was only taking it for naps and night time. I would throw all his pacifiers in his crib and in the morning, usually none were left. I decided that he really did not even use it that much. So I just took them away. He honestly never missed them. We told him they were for babies. And when DD came around, he never looked twice at her pacifier. He would and still does occassionally put hers in his mouth and pretend he is a baby, but it is not a comfort thing by any means. As far as DD, she has always only gotten her pacifier at naps and night time and I plan on doing the same thing with her around 13-15 months old and just stop giving her them when I lay her down.

I was at the library the other day and saw a child who looked like he was 5-6 walking around with a pacifier in his mouth! It was just gross!!!

  • We just took DD's away 3 days ago. I won't lie, a couple of long days (no naps) and a long night. She only had it for naps & bedtime prior but I think it'll start getting better soon. GL!

  • We did it when she was 13 months old. She was obsessed with it. It was always connected to her clothes. Well one day we some how forgot it on our trip to Sesame Place and she was fine without it. That night she whined a little but in the morning she was looking for it. She got over it within 2 days0

  • Griffin only got it at nap/bed and occasional long car ride, too...he slept so well we saw no reason to get rid of it too soon - but wanted it gone by the time he turned 3.

three months before he turned 3 we talked up the paci fairy...l et him pick out a toy from the fisher price catalog (batman cave) and then left his pacis out for the paci fairy - woke up to the big toy.  He never looked back.

  • I took away DS when he was about a year.  He really only used it at naps/bedtime, but one night I just quit giving it to him.  Never has been an issue since.
