Breastfeeding

Struggling at 7mo

I just returned from a 5 day work trip where I pumped religiously at all of the feeding times with the exception of the 3am and 5:30am. (I so enjoyed the first nights of semi-solid sleep in a long time.)

Over the course of the trip I experienced an expected loss of supply. I have been off work and off pump for a month, but I have pumped before and I know from that experience that I am not able to pump well. Meanwhile, M was fed with bottles on demand (slow flow nipple) and is now used to some pretty immediate gratification.

Well, now that I am home, I am trying very hard to go back to breastfeeding, but M is used to bottles and gets very impatient with my let down. We just spent a very frustrating hour trying to nurse together which ended in her not eating much and eventually just falling asleep fitfully. I even tried pumping until let down but she was much too frustrated even by then to try to nurse for long.

Any ideas/encouragement? Part of me thinks that I should use this opportunity to consider weaning, but the other part of me wants to make our original goal of 9 months. (I will wean mostly before going back to work in August due to the aforementioned pumping issue.)

Re: Struggling at 7mo

  • Just keep at it.  She'll nurse when she gets hungry enough.  I know that sounds mean but it's true.  Just don't give in and offer her a bottle or you'll be right back at square one.  That being said, if you want to wean now, don't feel bad about it.  A lot of people don't make it to 7 months.  Good luck!

  • I am so glad that you posted this!!! i am having the same problem as well. My son is going to be 7 months in 4 days and he is crawling around, playing on the floor, and pulling himself up onto things to stand up. the last few days have been super hot and humid and im hoping that just the weather is the reason why he hasnt been eating as much, but it seems to be a struggle to get him to latch on longer than 5-10 minutes. he wants to get on the floor, or stand on the floor infront of me while i sit on the couch- and nurse that way.... im not ready to stop nursing yet, but im not sure if this is him telling me he is ready for bigger and bette things- he loves food and i have no problem giving him some, but i dont want to substitute breast milk for formula more than i already am...
