Hi everyone!
Little Caitlin is now at the start of her 4th day and she's doing great! I'm recovering at warp speed and actually getting more sleep them I thought I would as it appears LO would love to feed every 4-5 hours so we have to wake her up for feedings. LOL
I just wanted to post a short note to the bumpies who plan to get induced when their Dr. recommends it.
1) The Pitocin came on slow. But they turn it up every 30 minutes. The pain was manageable for the first four hours without any meds. After I took a bath I was begging for the epidural. I asked my doula what she would do (narcotic drugs or epi) and she said epi. So I went for it.
2) The epi was not pleasant to put in but only took about 10 minutes all of which time (and I'm going to be honest) I was so scared I was crying like a five year old. Not from pain as they freeze you before they give you the epi needle. The only part that I actually felt anything was two little taps that were not pain but more like a zap. Very odd. Then it was sweet sweet releif right up until final pushing.
3) I would ask to have the epidual turned down as soon as you reach 10 cm. I went from 4-10 in half an hour! It shocked the Dr and nurse as the baby's heart rate kept going down so they were about to suggest a c-section when voila! It took one hour of the 2.5 hours pushing for the epi to wear off and I really wished I had the use of my legs. I had to labor laying down which was really hard and at one point I almost passed out from the position (I couldn't breathe in this position during pregnancy so I had to sleep on the sofa at nights so I wouldn't roll on my back) so I had a pretty oxygen mask on.
4) Don't fear the episiotomy. As soon as it was performed she slid right out. The did the episiotomy, helped the head and then DH delivered arms, body and legs. They only let him do this because he's hold EMT certification. Then the Dr. did the stitches. It was a little tough the last three days but I'm off the pain meds and it's just uncomforable to get up and sit sometimes - not all the time.
5) Breastfeed!!!! Still waiting for my milk to come in but LO is so happy.
Those are my suggestions. I would do all of it over again in a flash. From the time they started the petocin to delivery it was 14 hours. 2.5 of which were pushing which (with the epi) felt pretty easy. A ton of pressure but not pain. It was a very easy and fast delivery. Nothing like I thought it would be.
On a pain scale from 1-10 (one being nothing) I would have to say mine never went above a 4. Ever. During the whole process. If I had not done the epidural it would be been much more. But we watched a comedy, talked about lots of fun stuff, laughed and I actually enjoyed my body getting ready to give birth to our daughter. Incredible, huh?
And we are already talking about baby #2 getting started when the Dr. approves. YAY!
Re: Pitocin Induction (my experience - very positive)
Thank you! This is all grat info and since I'm not really making much progress on my own here, it looks like induction may become more and more likely for me.
So happy that you and your family are doing well!!
