Babies: 0 - 3 Months

time bw feedings?

Went to the pedi today for LO's 1 mos visit - all is well thank goodness except she said my LO is a snacker and shouldn't be eating every 2 hours - she should be going 3 hours.  She said this week to stretch to 2 hours 20 min and next week 2 hours 40 min and then to 3 hours.

So as of today I am going to start stretching her feeding time.

Tell me - do you count feeding time from when you begin feeding or end feeding?   For example:  She ate from 11:15-11:35 so is next feeding timed from 11:15 or 11:35?

Thanks

  • You count the feeding time from the beginning of the feeding.

  • How do you stretch out the feeding time? Won't LO be hungry? DS eats every 2 hours and he is two months. If he's hungry, I feed him.

  • Feedings are timed from beginning to beginning, my LO at at 9:30 and he'll eat again at 11:30.  My pedi also told me to work on stretching feedings. I have to tell you, up until this week it hasn't happened. And if you can handle hearing your LO cry, you are a stronger woman than I. My LO ate every 2 hours like clockwork up until last week (11 weeks) now he'll occasionally go 2 1/2 or so.

  • Our pedi told us the opposite..to keep with her 2 hour feeding during the day so that she won't need her night feeds... so does take a 2.5 hr stretch sometimes depending on how well she naps
  • You count from the beginning. I'm not telling you to go against your pedi's advice, but you LOs stomach is still very small so I wouldn't be overly adamant about stretching feedings.

  • my boy was a snacker too and ate every 2 hours, altho he was gaining weight fine - like almost a pound a week. Normally he would fall asleep 5-10 minutes into nursing and then when he woke up a few minutes later, I would feed him more from the same side. That helped him to sleep longer at night and ended up helping him go longer between BFing. I wouldn't just extend the time between feedings tho, that seems cruel to baby as they don't understand why they can't eat when they are hungry.

You would count feeding from either the beginning to beginning or the end to the end, as long as you are consistent.

  • timing a feeding is from the start time of one to the start time of another...however- why does your pedi want for you to stretch the feedings?  I'd say that if you are feeding on demand and are happy with LO "snacking" all day- stick with it.

  • I count feeding from start to start.  Do you BF or bottle feed (breast milk or formula)?

My pedi put DD on a schedule starting from 3 weeks old for the same reason - she was snacking and eating every 2 hours, sometimes 1.5 hours.  Pedi was worried that 1) she wouldn't be able to sleep consistently for long periods of time and 2) she was being overfed.  At that time, we were bottle feeding her expressed breast milk, but transitioned her at 1 month to a mix of breast milk and formula.  DD gets all formula now.  Pedi says that if BFing, feeding should be on demand, but there is a risk of overfeeding from a bottle.

At first, her schedule was every 2.5 - 3 hours and she was eating 7 times a day.  Over time, we got her feedings spaced out to every 3.5 to 5.5 hours during the day (she went from 6 times per day to 5 times per day).  We of course feed her if she's hungry, but if she's sleeping, we don't wake her up (that's how we can get it to 5.5 hours between feedings).  Since being on the schedule, she's also been sleeping for longer and longer periods of time at night, too.  For the past 2 weeks, she's been STTN.
