you know what's annoying?

When people who don't have kids yet try to act like experts. At the shower on Saturday there were two girls who don't have kids yet, and they were getting on my last nerve with their comments about everything. How dumb the swaddle blankets are (because who can't figure out how to wrap a baby?), how stupid the current carseat laws are (because they were out of the carseats by the time they were 2), how silly it is that my friend isn't putting bumpers or blankets in the cribs (because it's so unlikely that any baby could suffocate!), or that they tell people to put babies on their backs, and how "tummy time" is SOOO silly, that you don't need any special or free & clear detergent because they'll end up too sensitive, how you don't really need diaper rash cream because if you change your baby when they need to be changed then you won't have that problem anyway, how when they have their own kids they're never going to be all overprotective like that, etc. It was all I could do to bite my tongue and keep the peace.

Just had to complain.

    People like that are ignorant and I feel sorry for their future children. I would have had a hard time not laughing hysterically at them.

    Oh. Wow. I felt my BP rise just reading that. I had an older lady at my shower who kept making comments. "Why do you need all of this stuff? When my kids were babies I just held them with me in the front seat"...seriously?!?!

    Uh, yes that is very annoying!

    Oh those comments would have brought out the snark in me.  I probably would have said "so when did you work with you dr. spock?" or 'just wait until you have kids"

    Oh, but then you would have been accused of playing the "mom card."

    That must have been annoying.  I'm sure that those childless girls will be the ones who fall victim to every parenting gadget on the market when they have kids, not just the ones that work (like the SwaddleMe - I loved that thing).

    It's easy to be a parent when you have no kids!  I know I would have eventually said something.  How annoying!

    While I think the people you mentioned are clearly lacking common sense I don't think it's necessarily the fact that they don't have kids that's the problem. Some people just don't get it and these girls fit into that category. I think that you will find people of all ages saying this, with and without children like AngRx mentioned. I don't have kids but I know the importance of safety too.  I would have said something to the girls. You have more will power than I. lol

    Maybe we should set them up with my little brother.  He's like that too.  Not necessarily with products, but offering parenting advice when he isn't even fully independent from my mom yet himself, let alone having children.  That irks me tremendously!

    I had a similar convo this weekend with a friend of mine about to "properly manage" your time b/t child and DH.  It made me very defensive of my marriage.  I had to just take a deep breathe and realize there are 10 yrs. and kids difference b/t where she is in life and myself.

    People who don't know what they are talking about gets on my nerves. I would have said something. Not to start anything.. just say something politely. I don't have any kids and I can hardly form an opinion on anything baby related cuz I have no idea or experience! So I ask you gals for pretty much about anything I have questions about. If I were you I probably would have said, " ..and you know this from being how many kids moms?"

    I probably would have smiled and said, "I was a perfect parent too before I had kids." They'll find out eventually.
