Potty Training

Knows she has to poop, but won't go to the potty

She has been VERY aware of when she needs to poop and when it's happening for a while now. She gets visibly very uncomfortable. This morning she all of sudden started freaking out while we were eating breakfast, but when I checked her diaper there was nothing, probably just gas. I asked if she wanted to go to the potty and she said no. A few minutes later she got up and then came back to the kitchen crying, and sure enough she had pooped. I kept asking if she wanted to try the potty, and she kept saying "no, new diaper."

How can we move past this stage? We haven't done much active PTing, just letting her sit on the potty whenever she asks, and encouraging it when she seems to need it.

Re: Knows she has to poop, but won't go to the potty

  • My DS will hide and not let me put him on the potty when he has to poop.  Most kids will go poop after the are fully trained for pee.  My DD was that way. I have heard it is a sensory issue with most children.  They have been going in a diaper and the sensation on it falling can be unsettling for most.  I had a friend that forces the poop issue and her child became constipated, b/c she would hold it all day until a pull-up was put on at night.

  • There really is not much you can do about it which I know is so frustrating.  I'm going through it now and while my DD is close to being pee trained, we have held on putting her in undies due to the poop issue but we are planning on moving her to undies July 6th when we get back from vacation and just seeing what happens.  I just always ask my DD when she tells me she has to poop if she wants to sit on the potty.  If she says no, I leave her alone.  We talk about undies and how she will get them when she poops.  We use Skittles as a reward and she gets 2 if she poops on the potty vs 1 when she pees.  I let her be in the bathroom with me when I poop and same with her big sister (who thankfully does not mind).  SHe has started sitting on the potty and tries to poop, mainly just has gas, but we make a big deal out of her trying.
