Potty Training

Anyone with older LO's deal with PT regression?

My niece is almost 2.5 and has been fully PT (day and night) since her 2nd birthday. She did perfectly well until the past month or so, and started having little piddle accidents in her panties. Not just one or two, but at least 4-5 a day, if not more.

She knows she's doing it. If you ask her if she went in her panties, she'll tell you she has. Sometimes she'll gasp when she does it. Yesterday she also pooped in her panties (and she hasn't done that since she was in diapers).

She was in daycare 2 days a week for a few months and started doing it there. She was the only kid in her age group that was potty trained so we thought she was regressing to fit in with the kids. My sister pulled her from daycare and she's with my mom and my DD 5 days a week now, but she's still doing it.

We can't figure out what's going on. Is she doing it for the attention? Should she be disciplined somehow after she does it? My sister and mom are at a loss.

Re: Anyone with older LO's deal with PT regression?

  • Sorry but pulling her from daycare simple because she is regressing in potty training seems very extreme to me.  ANyway, it is very normal for kids to have potty regression and is all part of the process.  When my older DD has done this, we bring back a reward system and that gets her back on track and after a week or two, we stop the rewards and she is fine.  We have done things such as a Skittle when she pees in the potty and 2 when she poops and have also done a chart - 1 sticker per day for no accidents and after x amount of days, she gets a bigger reward like going out for ice cream or picking what activity we do that day (given options of course).  You need to find what works for you child.  Kids at this age get very busy and don't want to stop what they are doing to go potty.
