When did you first put shoes on your LO ?

I made the mistake of telling my mom today that I don't always keep N in shoes and she yelled at me.Sad  Yeah, she's like "He's getting ready to walk, you have to put him in shoes all the time, he's going to have flat feet, blah, blah, blah ..."   FWIW - I started putting shoes on him the moment he started standing up and staying up back around end of March and when we do go out (park, mall, restaurant), he's always in shoes, but around the house, he's in socks or barefoot....am I wrong?  Should I have him in his shoes all the time?

  • Laney isn't standing on her own yet, and being a Florida girl we go barefoot all the time.  But, I'm glad you brought this up because this is something I want to ask my pedi when we go in next month.  If it were up to me, I'd leave her barefoot all the time EmbarrassedParadise

  • I think most peds think walking barefoot at home is best and shoes are needed for walking outside or in public places.

Aaron seldom wears shoes (I have a few Robeez) and is either in socks with the treads or barefoot. When he's outdoors he has socks to cover his left foot (the burn) per the doctors.

  • A dr. friend of mine left her LO's barefoot for as long as possible.  She said it would help their feet develop more naturally and not "mold" their feet with shoes.

For us, we use soft shoes (like Robeez) when we're out, but she usually works them off anyway. No firm soles for us until she starts to stand/cruise outside of the house.

  • I just received this via email:

"Your baby is probably beginning to cover more territory, whether by scooting and crawling or by cruising upright, or maybe even by trying a few tentative first steps. When you're indoors, you may want to let your baby go without shoes, booties, or socks -- experts believe going barefoot helps a baby's foot develop properly and promotes better balance and coordination"

  • Ha, we're Ohio girls and still go barefoot most of the time.  For dress up and some outside adventures, I have a few pairs of robeez.  Of course, she's not close to walking yet.

We rarely put M in shoes. He's never in them at home and I only put them on when we go out if I think he'll get the chance to cruise around. I mean, I'm not going to have him walking around barefoot out in public. He eats his feet!
  • S hasn't been in shoes yet!

MIL has made comment a couple times and nicely hinted that she wants her in shoes by giving me a couple pair for her on Mother's Day (true story). can't even say how sad i was to see that golly gee the shoes are too small now.

she very rarely wears socks, either- only when it was really cold out and we left the house.

I like this. I am a completely negligent mother - the nanny has bought all of her shoes so far and I never put them on her. The most I do are the Zutano booties to keep her little piggies warm in our drafty old house.

She got a Stride Rite gift certificate for her birthday. I figure that once she really is walking we'll go get her some shoes - I want the old-fashioned white lace-up ones. Apparently for the first shoes at Stride Rite you have to make an appointment so the people can fit her and tell you how to check her shoes for fit and comfort. I need that lesson for sure!

  • You know what is funny!? My mom told me that we were always in shoes...even in the house. She said you would be considered a bad mom if you didn't have shoes on your baby out in public!

I have only had Gracie in sandals once.

  • Charlie doesn't own a pair of shoes.   Guess I should start thinking about that, considering he's "cruising" now.

I just got shoes for DS this weekend.  He's been cruising for a couple weeks now and is really trying to walk.  I remember with DD that shoes actually helped her.  The lady at the shoe dept in Nordstrom's did recommend that we keep the shoes on him for at least part of the time at home where he was the most comfortable so he could get used to them.  So we keep them on him about half the time at home.
