I registered for one but nobody bought it... I was wondering if maybe people thought it wasn't necessary. Did you get one or are you planning to get one?
No. We didn't have one the first time, and I don't feel the need to buy one this time.
We just kept trash cans by the changing areas upstairs and down with grocery sacks in them, and we threw the full sacks away just about daily. *shrugs* It was inexpensive, and believe it or not, I never noticed a smell. Of course, the truly rank diapers always get tossed immediately and are never deposited into the diaper area trashbins.
We got one, we registered for it, and got lots of the filler bags for it. Not sure how it will all work out, but I am sure we will be just fine with it. My cuz has one, and she loves it.

We got a Diaper Champ. The Diaper Genie comes with special bags you have to keep buying, as opposed to the champ that takes regular trash bags.
I got one with my first, and to be honest, you don't have to change the refill very often and I'm glad we have one! You don't have to worry about taking it out every day and it keeps the stink away. ;o)
I got the diaper genie itself but need to go buy the refills as I didn't get any of those. I have two friend with 1 year olds and they both rave about how great the diaper genie is. I'm hoping it will keep my dog out of the diaper pail!
Before I switched to cloth diapers I actually had the diaper champ and I prefer this over the diaper genie. They both do an equally good job of keeping in the odors. Both stink a bit when you open them too (no matter what people say about the diaper genie). I nannied for a family that had the diaper genie and it always smelled when you opened it to change it. The diaper champ uses regular kitchen sized trash bags while the diaper genie requires you to purchase the special fillers and then you still need a trash bag to put the long diaper "snake" into when you change the diaper genie.
We're all about saving money, so we went with the diaper champ so that we could use regular trash bags. It's also a lot less complex than the genie. You just put the diaper in and flip. We never had any issues with stink, but we also routinely lysoled it when we changed the bag. Like someone else said, they both stink when you have to take the diapers out.

I bought a regular trash can for DS when he was born since I didn't want to spend the extra money- We went out and bought one a couple months ago after we found out we were expecting... The convenience of the diaper genie takes the cake and has definitely made it worth it!
we have and will probably use a diaper genie from #1 but after a few months i just started throwing the diapers in the trash we breastfeed exclusively in our house so the diapers dont smell that bad and we take the trash out often enough that it is not a problem ... the diaper genie II was very convienent during the first months however when the baby goes through 8-12 diapers a day
We got the elite... it doesn't make a giant 'poop sausage', but it does use the special refills. We stocked up on those and on Huggies size 1 and 2, and wipes, at costo because they have a sale on this week. I've heard nothing but good things about it, so we will see!

This. We have a diaper champ from DD and I really dont understand how some people go with out some form of diaper pail. Maybe their kids diapers dont stink as bad as my DD's did, but it was a necessity! Especially once baby starts solid foods! (FWIW DD was EBF for a year, and they say BF babies poop stinks less- ha!)
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013!
They are completely unecessary. A waste of money to buy the genie itself, then have to buy the bags and then when baby is out of diapers it serves no purpose. Go to target and get a regular trash can.

If we don't get one from the showers that are planned, I'm going to go out and buy one. There's also an Arm and Hammer brand that looks interesting too.
With DD my DH was completely against it but we quickly realized he was wrong! Worked out really, really well! Used it just for poopy diapers and our simple human stainless steel trash can for the pee diapers.
Why anyone would want to keep poopy diapers in their home for any period of time is beyond me. Put them in a plastic bag and in the OUTSIDE trash can as soon as you're done changing. Yuck!!
Some people don't have this option. We live in an condo complex and can only take out the trash once a day in the mornings. We don't have an outside trash bin.
We registered for one, then decided against it. Once we realized we were going to do cloth diapers. So we just bought a regular trash pail. We'll use disposables in the beginning and then transition over to cloth once he gets a little bigger.

We bought a Diaper Champ for DS, and will be re-using it for DD when she arrives. We registered for it, but no one bought it (or our breast pump). My MIL actually requested us to put additional items on the registry when it was basically the only thing left. A good friend w/kids suggested that a "diaper trash can" might not have been as fun/exciting for ppl to purchase as cute clothes, bedding, toys, etc when I questioned why that was one of the only remaining things on our registry. It seemed to me like a necessity (and truly was for us as soon as solid foods started so I do recommend one), but her perspective made so much sense...
We registered and received a Diaper Champ at our shower. I liked it because you can use regular trash bags and they seem simple to change. If we didn't get it I would have just bought a regular trash can with a lid as its essentially the same thing.

Because I don't have this option. I live in an apartment, and the complex's shared dumpster is about a block's walk from our front door. I don't plan on walking down there 12 times a day.
