Anyone own/rent a loft?

We are house hunting and heavily considering a loft. It's a true loft as in there are no walls (well, except the bathroom but they don't go all the way up to the ceiling).

If you have one, do you feel like it's difficult with having a LO vs. before when you were child free?  Any tips on how you set it up and designated space?

Re: Anyone own/rent a loft?

  • Where's it at?

I've never rented one but I think I wouldn't like it. I mean I would feel like I have to be quiet when DS sleeps and no privacy. I think as a couple it would be fun not sure about as a family.

In a way I say go for it I mean it would be a really cool experience but I definitely wouldn't be buying a loft. I just worry about the noise factor with DS that would be my only thing.

  • Yeah, I thought about that too.
  • I never, but I couldn't do it. The first thing I thought of was being able to smell DH's shiit since the walls don't go all the way up. The second thing was the whole sexy time experience.

Many lofts are broken up by furniture or curtains, but with a child you have to think about what that means. He can pull on the drapes if you go that route or he can pull the furniture if you go the other. What happens when he's older and you're having intimate time with your DH? There isn't a door for you to lock. And it'll be much easier to hear him.

So honestly, I agree with Murf. It's a nice way to live if you're single or a couple, but may not make the most sense when you have a family.

  • I wouldnt be able to do it.  Too much wide open space.  I would want more privacy and have rooms w/ doors.
  • Loft living isn't for me. I need a house with a yard. Especially since we have a hyper active dog. I do like what they have done to downtown Anaheim though.
  • We rent a downtown loft, but ours is a soft loft.  DS' nursery has walls/doors (albeit big sliding doors that don't block sound very well) and our bedroom is upstairs, with a half wall that looks down onto the rest of the loft.  The two previous lofts we lived in (all in the same building) were true, open loft floorplans.

We moved out of our last one and into this one specifically because it had a room we could use as a nursery.  FWIW, there is another couple with a baby in our building, and their space is a true loft.  They just have an area set aside for her crib and other furniture.

I think it's totally possible - it's all in what you're willing to put up with.  If you purchase, would it be feasible to add some more permanent type barriers to the space?

yes. some of the models have the type of walls you described but we can also build real walls.
