questions to ask Doula

Hi - we're interviewing a doula next week, and I'm kind of lost on what we're supposed to be asking her. I already have a lot of info from her that we exchanged with emails, so I don't know what i'm supposed to be thinking about for an "interview".

Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: questions to ask Doula

  • Whats her philosophy on child birth? (You may know this through convo already but you want to make sure you two have similar values and beliefs)

Who is her back up person?

How many clients does she take a month?

How accessible is she throughout pregnancy? (one thing I love about my doula is she has been a very big resource for me throughout pregnancy. When ever I have needed help or suggestions with regard to baby I call her and she has been very good about getting right back to me)

Thats all I can think of I hope some of it helped you!!!

I'm not using a doula, but if you could get ahold of 'Your Best Birth' - the Ricky Lake book, I thought there was a set of questions in there to ask your doula...I think.

    TTC #2 since April 2012

    Year 1 - nothing

    Year 2 - two m/c

    Year 3 - unexplained diagnosis & 4 failed IUIs with Clomid/Letrozole

Year 4 - still unexplained & 3 failed IUIs with Follistim & Ovidral

Year 5 - trying on our own

  • I used a combination of the questions in Your Best Birth and Ina May's book to interview all my docs, mws, etc. Even if you don't get those books, checking out their questions is totally worth it.
  • thanks for all of the suggestions and for the link!

  • I found this list of questions to ask a potential midwife, but I think it'd work for a doula, too.  GL!
