XP: Pumping for work and a ? about increasing oz.

So I've been pumping 4oz just once a day, during LO's morning feed, and have been using pumped BM off and on throughout my maternity leave, which means right now I've got 13 bags of 4oz each. I have two weeks left. Is this a sufficient method or should I start pumping after LO is done during each nursing session?

How many "servings" do you pump for LO a day? Should I aim for two a day? More? Or just pump my @ss off, lol?

Also, I wanted to see if LO needs more than just 4oz now, since she's getting pretty big and has been nursing a bit more often. I have two baggies thawed that I didn't use and they're on borrowed time. I was going to put both of them in an 8oz bottle for a feed this evening to see how much she takes but is that forcing too  much on her? Do babies just suck down what they're given? Should I just try five oz and see if she takes it?  WWYD?

  • I freeze 4-8 oz a day but I don't go to back to work until Sep.  Our daycare requires that we bring in at least 5 bottles a day and I am concerned that once I go back to work, my supply will decrease because I won't be able to pump as much.  I would think you might want to pump more so that you  have plenty for when you go back to work.  That of course depends on how many bottle feedings your LO will be taking a day when you go back to work.

My DD is 11 weeks and still usually eats about 4 oz per feeding.   Sometimes she will take 6 and sometimes only 3.  I freeze in 3 and 4 oz increments.  You might want to freeze different sized amounts so that you can adjust as her eating habits change and you won't have to waste a 4 oz bag if she only needs 2 oz.  She will stop eating when she's full, you won't overfeed her.

What's your pumping method for getting up to 8oz a day? I have a hand pump and a double electric btw. Right now I get about 4oz out of one side with DD eats off the other during her 9am feed.

  • Right now I am pumping twice a day for my freezer stash.  I do after the first am feeding and then after the last nighttime feeding, before I go to bed.  I was doing 3, on in the afternoon, for awhile.  If you want to work on boosting your supply before going back you could pump after every feed that last week or so.  I usually did a power pumping session every now and then when I was working to help my supply.

About how long after a feeding would you wait to pump, like right after or an hour later?

Power pumping is 10 minutes pumping, 10 minute break, and repeat for an hour right? I tried that last night and I could barely get half an oz the second round.
